Critics Consensus

The Secret Scripture has acclaimed source material and a well-chosen cast in its corner, but despite its stars' valiant efforts, this adaptation was better left on the page.

This is a honourable film that has hits and misses. Watch it for the performances, particularly Redgrave's. Its most telling line is this: Bravery in the face of the enemy

In even the smallest expressions of this freedom, whether it's a rare grin from Mara or Redgrave playing a few bars of "Moonlight Sonata," "The Secret Scripture" soars.

I started to cry halfway in and didn't finish until ten minutes after the film finished but then I've been a patient on a psychiatric ward, had ect and been found guilty of something I didn't do. I don't concentrate so well these days - a product of the ECT and the drugs they gave me to make me 'better' - but this film pulled me in and held me close. A stunning performance by Vanessa Redgrave and the cast, creating a very beautiful movie x

Beautiful. Beautiful. Beautiful. I cried at the end. This is a beautiful film that reminded me that when I don't tried to control the outcome of great injustice within my own life, that it does even out. This film is shot beautifully as well. Both Eric Banna and Vanessa Redgrave know how to choose films of depth and wisdom.

Sometimes "critics" seriously piss me off. This was a wonderful, interesting and engaging movie. It was happy, sad and exciting. It made you feel sadness, anger, happiness. I loved it and came on here just to say that - before I saw the critics review. Don't judge watching a movie off of want some movie perfectionist who gives a movie a bad rating despite that majority of VIEWERS liked it.
