Critics Consensus

A squarely traditional yet somewhat progressive Western, The Homesman adds another absorbing entry to Tommy Lee Jones' directorial résumé.

If 'The Homesman' proves anything, it's that there's no movie that can't get a shot in the arm from a couple scenes of Tommy Lee Jones hollerin' and dancin'. Go to Full Review

Swank, an Oscar winner for "Boys Don't Cry" and "Million Dollar Baby," is outstanding, getting to the essence of Mary Bee's pride and pain. And in the showier role, Jones impressively peels away layers of rambunctiousness to reveal George's humanity. Go to Full Review

Without becoming a version of John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn from “Rooster Cogburn” as a blustering and bickering mismatched pair, both Jones and Swank stay true to the hardscrabble roots needed for this story Go to Full Review

The Homesman is a beautiful film that brings a rarely seen female (and feminist) perspective to the stories of the Old West. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Draco S Mar 20, 2019 Too disturbing. Shows a woman murdering her newborn, and another being raped repeatedly.
Leia P Jan 27, 2019 This is perhaps at once the most beautifully scripted, filmed, and acted story, and also the most disheartening and dispiriting film I've ever seen. A deeply painful and profound story that takes the heart right out of you for the pain, suffering and loss. If nothing else, we may come away from this with a deepened understanding of what frontier life may have seen and experienced. The darkest stories we didn't know. The film is painfully rendered, and profound. See more
Albus S Jan 12, 2019 disappointing! This story didn't really seem to add up despite having a great cast
George S Dec 21, 2018 It was a fine movie but was a bit too long and uneventful towards the end. Thank god for 5 minutes of Meryl Streep before the movie ended. I however wished for a different ending. See more
Kylo M Nov 17, 2018 I love this film for so many reasons. I found myself wanting to relate to one woman, and could not. Rather I related to them collectively because together their characters capture the harshness of the West on women, then and now. I would have liked to fall in love with Jones' character, but then again, it is the West, and we don't hardly ever fall in love anyway. See more
Hagrid G Sep 3, 2018 I thought "How could this movie be bad? It has Tommy Lee Jones, Hilary Swank and Meryl Streep in it!" The critics here gave it 81%! Well I have come to realize that critics are more about making themselves look smart than they are about recommending a good entertaining movie and so in this case as well as most others, you should go by the AUDIENCE rating of 52%! This movie they say has twists and turns but all i can say is that if it has them it takes an awful long time to get to them, and at this speed the turns are not going to give you much of a thrill! I turned this off about half way through. Tommy Lee Jones should stick to his day job (acting) and not try to be a director. IMHO. If you love westerns and don't mind SLOW, you might like it but I think most will do well to take this one off their lists. See more
