What to Know

Critics Consensus

When not overusing sight gags, slapstick, and Richard Pryor, Superman III resorts to plot points rehashed from the previous Superman flicks.

Mainly, it is pretty much what you would expect from a Superman movie starring Richard Pryor: moderately entertaining and totally predictable. Go to Full Review

…Superman III is crass, corny, and a permanent strain to watch…Richard Pryor’s brand of worldly comedy just doesn’t fit this universe and the result is a tonal catastrophe that shows director Richard Lester way out of his comic element…. Go to Full Review

Lester apparently encouraged Pryor to do a lot of the shtick he was famous for at the time, which made the movie more campy than it should have been. Go to Full Review

Leia M Feb 19, 2019 Richard Lester shows the world that he doesn't get Superman.
Harry S Feb 3, 2019 The effects are slightly better even if they can't always dodge the obvious bluescreen when Superman's flying "which was revolutionary back then", Christopher Reeve does a good job playing Supes and the highlight of the film is definitely a fight between Clark Kent and Evil Superman mainly because of how they shot it so well, you'd swear they cast Reeve's twin brother for a fight scene. Sadly, Superman III is a tragic step down from the last two movies (three if you count the Richard Donner cut of Superman II as a separate film, even though it came out years after this movie). The slapstick comedy is excessive, going against Donner's original vision that superhero movies can be taken seriously, the villain is a blatant rehash of Lex Luthor, Margot Kidder's return as Lois Lane was pointless because she only shows up in two scenes, one of which is just to reveal that she's going on vacation. Just a conversation in the script that goes something like this: "Hey, Chief, where's Lois?" "You haven't heard? She's gone to the Bermuda Triangle" would've sufficed. And there's the major problem of way too much Richard Pryor. I like the scenes with Clark Kent but half of Pryor's scenes look like they came from a completely different movie. Even the editing implies that this was the case before they converted it into a Superman sequel halfway through production. You could remove these, add in some exposition for when everything finally overlaps and you'd barely feel like you missed out on something. Superman III isn't one of the worst superhero movies I have ever seen and the production values are still decent but if you skip this Super Sequel (TM) I don't think you'll be missing out on anything. Han G Jan 16, 2019 Although the cast is certainly game the entire effort comes off like a corny comic book parody (and not in a good way!) of a Superman story and is a total waste in the final analysis and best forgotten. See more
Jul 23, 2018 So bad, only looks good compared to the next 2 superman movies.
Han M Jul 23, 2018 pure entertainment, just not with so many surprises that we left the first and second part
Abraham S Jul 13, 2018 "Despite the fact that this film has a few good moments and Christopher Reeve did his best, it's the most boring superhero film I have ever seen. The story barely made sense, logic has left the building, the editing is terrible from the opening credits, the visual effects were terrible, and the evil Superman...that's not how you make a villain. For lazy writers, you can't fix stupid." See more
