Charles Aaronson Motion Picture Herald (Exhibitors Herald) Apr 15, 2024
The picture has been extremely well mounted, the atmosphere of the period and the surroundings appearing definitely authentic, and, in common with reproductions of that period, always appealing.

Whatever you may think of the sensational career of the heroine with her gowns, parasols, jewels and drooping glances you will cheer the presence of Mae West's colorful personality in the movies.

Mae West is in a class by herself, since she can do and say vulgar things, sing ribald songs, and still not be particularly offensive because of her likeable personality. As for the story, one should not take it seriously if one hopes to be entertained.

It is a rough, raucous, bawdy picture, Frankily and Johnnily prurient but so vitalized, so authoritatively and effectively staged and acted, that it becomes one of the more exciting exhibits of recent weeks.

Lots of action, much colorful background, tough-mug acting and snappy direction by Lowell Sherman -- plus songs by Mae, warbled in her inimitable manner -- make She Done Him Wrong strong for the box-office.

Some folks may object to this one on the ground that the "garbage has been piled too high" -- BUT it is plenty funny. Mae West's first starring film is steeped in sin and sex -- but, boys and girls, the laughs are there.

Mae West (Diamond Lil) sure dishes cut plenty of that risque business in this one (that's putting it delicately, but in spite of that, or on account of it, depending on yourself, it is downright funny).

West puts on a show that's a robust treat for those who like lusty laughs. In a class by herself when it conies to this sort of stuff, Miss West lets the double entendre nifties fall from her lips in such a disarming manner that they never seem offensive.

A brawly howl of a picture that for sheer first class spicy rough stuff, takes the cake.

Its impossible to overstate Wests influence on Western (pardon the phrase) culture; in particular the trails she blazed for other female stars.

The end result isn't a memorable film as much as it's merely a memorable performance.

[Mae West] sings some sorrowful blues that I want to hear again the third time I see the film.

Coming in at a spare hour plus, She Done Him Wrong is entertaining, hilarious, and shocking in many ways-even in a Pre-Code world, what West got away with onscreen is nothing short of revolutionary.

With a tantalizing control of tempo, West sashays and quips her way through a web of crime and local politics, flaunting a carefree erotic radiance that mixes business and pleasure with gleefully feigned indifference.
