Burlesque barroom singer Lady Lou (Mae West) knows everyone in town, especially the men. Unfortunately, her convict ex-boyfriend Chick Clark (Owen Moore) is the jealous type and vows violence against her if she behaves unfaithfully while he's in prison. To make matters worse, Lou's boss, Gus Jordan (Noah Beery Sr.), secretly runs a prostitution and counterfeiting ring, and the director of the city mission next door is actually a federal agent (Cary Grant). What's a girl to do?

Critics Consensus

She Done Him Wrong, but putting Cary Grant and Mae West together is pretty much nothing but right.

Philip K. Scheuer Los Angeles Times Apr 15, 2024
It is a rough, raucous, bawdy picture, Frankily and Johnnily prurient but so vitalized, so authoritatively and effectively staged and acted, that it becomes one of the more exciting exhibits of recent weeks. Go to Full Review

2.5/4
Lots of action, much colorful background, tough-mug acting and snappy direction by Lowell Sherman -- plus songs by Mae, warbled in her inimitable manner -- make She Done Him Wrong strong for the box-office. Go to Full Review
THR Staff The Hollywood Reporter Apr 15, 2024
Some folks may object to this one on the ground that the "garbage has been piled too high" -- BUT it is plenty funny. Mae West's first starring film is steeped in sin and sex -- but, boys and girls, the laughs are there. Go to Full Review
Charles Aaronson Motion Picture Herald (Exhibitors Herald) Apr 15, 2024
The picture has been extremely well mounted, the atmosphere of the period and the surroundings appearing definitely authentic, and, in common with reproductions of that period, always appealing. Go to Full Review

Whatever you may think of the sensational career of the heroine with her gowns, parasols, jewels and drooping glances you will cheer the presence of Mae West's colorful personality in the movies. Go to Full Review
P.S. Harrison Harrison's Reports Apr 15, 2024
Mae West is in a class by herself, since she can do and say vulgar things, sing ribald songs, and still not be particularly offensive because of her likeable personality. As for the story, one should not take it seriously if one hopes to be entertained. Go to Full Review

Jan 26, 2019 The best, GREATEST comedy movie ever made! With the best movie song ever sung: Frankie and Johnny! And the best movie quote ever spoken: "Why don't you come up sometime and see me?" See more
Abraham P Jan 25, 2015 West is pretty unique for her time. 1001 movies to see before you die.
Rey R Nov 20, 2014 So bad its kinda good. Very campy with a terrible confusing plot and many weird names to remember like Spider. The scenes jumped around a lot and there was some terrible plot twists with spies and even murder. What I loved most tho was Mae West and her script. Her costumes were gorgeous and her script was perfect with her dry deliverance of humor. Her accent was perfect as well with such a unique character. The ending doesn't make much sense, but its a movie more about character than story. See more
Hermione R Oct 15, 2012 The shortest and probably the most atypical Best Picture nominee of all time is She Done Him Wrong - a film which is messy in plot and pacing, but undeniably immensely entertaining and very funny. The humor is great and the dialogue is outstanding with many hilarious lines still famous today. Cary Grant is excellent and Mae West demands your attention with her one of a kind, edgy persona, charisma and top-notch comic timing. See more
Albus P Mar 1, 2007 I have read many stories about Mae West (including some historical connections to earlier vaudeville performer/inspiration Eva Tanguay) and seen documentaries about Mae on YouTube. Ms. West became famous performing on Broadway in multiple comedies that she wrote herself. She adapted her hit stage play Diamond Lil into this slightly cleaned up film that is only a little over one hour. Her character's name is changed to Lady Lou. She is a seductive night club singer. She was already 40 when she made this, her second feature film. Her matronly curves may not fit the ideal shape of a sexy leading lady, however her popularity and sex appeal made a lot of money for Paramount. Mae discovered Cary Grant and helped make him a leading man with his part in this picture. Mae West is definitely distinctive in voice and mannerisms. Her style has been imitated so much to the point of campiness and the story here as well as the technical moviemaking skill on display in this quickly made flick all means that She Done Him Wrong hasn't aged all that well.
