What to Know

Critics Consensus

BloodRayne is an absurd sword-and-sorcery vid-game adaptation from schlock-maestro Uwe Boll, featuring a distinguished (and slumming) cast.

A film that tries to convey a palpable sense of epic adventure and maximum exploitation of violence and sex, but which ultimately feels as relevant and important as a short film directed, written and starring cats and dogs. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

At the rate Boll's improving, he'll achieve a film worthy of a thumbs up rating sometime late next decade. Go to Full Review

Luke R Feb 15, 2019 BloodRayne is an entertainingly trashy vampire movie that Uwe Boll, a director much maligned mostly by braindead fanboys and gamers (the kind who still live in their parents' basement), and filmed in Romania. While the movie is far from perfect in every conceivable way (casting, acting, direction, camwera work, score, story, editing), it certainly isn't boring - and will appeal to people who like not-so-subtle historic action/horror movies with a high body count and gratuitous gore effects (to see the latter, you must seek out the uncut version, which runs 98 minutes). Set in no specific place or era (but most 18th/19th century Transsylvania), the story, though nonsensical, proceeds at a fast clip. And, of course, there's a little nudity and simulated sex - Kristanna Loken is quite the looker, actually. Michael Madsen was drunk during the entire shoot (you can find some entertaining clips on YT where Uwe Boll elaborates on this), and in one scene at a campfire, you can actually see him stumble and fall outside the frame. Ben Kingsley, in his few, brief scenes, delivers a non-performance, but Marvin Aday (aka Meat Loaf) is entertainingly over the top in his brief role as a vampire surrounded by (actual!) prostitutes. The special effects are a mixed bag and range from okay to terrible, but amusingly so. So, set your expectations low and you can actually enjoy this lowbrow genre movie quite a bit. I know I have. Harry L Jan 29, 2019 Bloodrayne is just plain awful.
Finn W Sep 30, 2017 Pretty awful dialogue but otherwise fairly entertaining. Nowhere near as bad as its reputation.
Theodore W Dec 10, 2007 So truly awful it MUST be seen to be believed.
