Zama

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Zama offers a series of scathingly insightful observations about colonialism and class dynamics -- and satisfyingly ends a long wait between projects from writer-director Lucrecia Martel.

As an existential objet d'art Zama stands as a serious achievement. But that won't prevent even the most sophisticated of cinephiles from staggering out of the theater, wondering "What in the world did I just see?" Go to Full Review

This blackly funny-and ultimately haunting-examination of colonial history is thoroughly characteristic in its brilliant manipulation of physical space. Go to Full Review

I must give Martel credit for her firmness in sticking to the story. But there wasn't enough visually or thematically here in a film that focuses on a man who is…just waiting. Go to Full Review

Feb 2, 2019 Usually love these type of films, got good reviews, was looking forward to it with a few beers but after an hour and nothing happening,no action, no plot, being bored nearly to death i turned it off! Couldnt endure any more! See more
Han S Dec 8, 2018 *Spoiler Warning A remarkable film which is, at times, funny, absurd, and infuriating. Zama, a Spanish officer who's awaiting a transfer to Buenos Aires, thinks he has authority in his current residence, when in reality, he's commonly disrespected by the governors who have a way of ignoring his requests by trying to dodge around them or requiring for him to do other tasks first. As the film progresses and the passage of time is shown by how he slowly ages before our eyes (shown by his hair turning gray and his face developing wrinkles), his life begins to feel like an inescapable, absurdist nightmare. Martel doesn't attempt to paint him as a sympathetic character though as scenes such as how he had an affair with a native woman or an early scene where he spies on a group of naked women by the beach only to slap one of them after he's discovered reveal his character flaws. The visuals and the sound of this film are also pretty interesting. Martel often fills the film with disorienting sounds and visuals which feel like they don't belong in the setting the film takes place in. Instead of coming off as jarring, however, they reflect Zama's state as being a man out of time. Then, there's the shocking final act. It's a disturbing outcome for Zama, yet still darkly humorous as he wouldn't have had to endure any of it if he had been allowed to transfer. Overall, I found this to be a complex and compelling film, and I imagine that I'll pick up on new details once I rewatch it. See more
Albus R Nov 9, 2018 As much as the titular character suffers, Martel doesn't turn him into a tragic figure nor do his torments overshadow the very real horrors of late 18th century colonialism. Its an impressive feat, one that's matched by the haunting and enigmatic ending. See more
Leia L Oct 25, 2018 this just goes to show how wrong critics can be. this is one of the most poorly edited films i've seen in a while. if you're an insomniac though, it's just perfect and better than ambien to get you to sleep. See more
Hagrid G Sep 16, 2018 Beautifully shot film which contrasts nicely with the agonizingly slow nightmare that Zama finds himself living in. Although the pace may seem slow to some the content packs quite a punch while exploring imperialism, race/class, and the overall purpose of a life. Technically speaking I especially thought the sound effects were excellent, from the richly textured crunching of boots on sand to the insects in the evening scenes. There is a lot to unpack in Zama and I can see myself continuing to think about this one in the days to come. See more
Finn S Sep 1, 2018 Argentina should have a better movie to present in a movie festival. I guess that movie critics are a bunch of boring people if they have chosen this movie. See more
