In this fact-based film, John Holmes (Val Kilmer) is one of the most successful porn stars of all time. But, when his rampant drug abuse forces him into prostitution, both his disapproving wife, Sharon (Lisa Kudrow), and his 16-year-old girlfriend, Dawn (Kate Bosworth), are on the verge of leaving him. As John sinks lower and lower into Hollywood, Calif.'s criminal underworld, he meets a seedy drug lord (Eric Bogosian) and finds himself caught up in a tragic chain of events.

From a distance, Val Kilmer still passes as beautiful... But close up, his is the face of corruption: an intense mass of beforehis-time lines. There is certainly a great role out there for him, but reallife former porn star John C Holmes isn't it. Go to Full Review

A shallow recreation of an era, of a lifestyle, and of a counterculture -- in short, a pale facsimile of Paul Thomas Anderson’s superb Boogie Nights. Go to Full Review

Val Kilmer ("The Salton Sea") fails to manifest the eccentric character of notorious porn legend Johnny "Wadd" Holmes in this artful but unbalanced dramatization of the gruesome 1981 Laurel Canyon murders that Holmes was implicated in committing. Go to Full Review

Hermione W Feb 17, 2019 Tells the true story of porn star john holmes who was involved in a robbery & then involved in the murders of the people that where involved in said robbery bizzare really I mean being involved in both WTF, it does make sense if you watch this An Alright Movie See more
Rey R Sep 8, 2018 This is really a nifty movie
Anakin L Jul 12, 2018 I was surprised by the bad reviews. I rewached it recently using boxxy software and loved the fact that it isn't traditional Hollywood stuff. There is no hero. The characters are completely immoral. There are two separate retellings Rashomon-style, no character development, and in fact true. There is nothing more bizarre than a true story. This movie can also be hard to follow in Act 1 for my fellow ADD sufferers. It's a movie of sex, drugs, blood, and porn. I do have a problem with Eric Bogosian. His accent is extremely distracting. Han S Jun 19, 2017 Pretty bad movie. In telling this fact-based through multiple viewpoints, the filmmakers add an unnecessary layer of ambiguity to the story that makes the film feel slow, confused and tedious, redeemed only in part thanks to some stylish editing and directing and a solid lead performance from Kilmer. Albus R Feb 16, 2017 Foot long. Who's got the foot long. More fact based than Boogie Nights. The latter years of John Homes is a haze of drugs and murder. Kilmer is the balls and fine support from Levine, Gainey, Nelson, Bogonsian and in particular Dylan McDermott. Enjoyed it a lot more on the second viewing. See more
