Critics Consensus

As a visual experience, Wolf Totem boasts thrills that compensate for the significant narrative sacrifices made in bringing Jiang Rong's novel to the screen.

The greatest aspect of "Wolf Totem" is the gorgeous, sweeping cinematography that captures the landscape in breathtaking aerial shots and crystal-clear color. The story has its touching moments but dissolves into disjointed melodrama. Go to Full Review

May 27, 2018 While the story and the actors are doing a good job of keeping us enthralled to the screen for almost 2 hours, there's no denying that it is the scenery that is the true star of this movie. Ron W Mar 26, 2017 A movie worth watching, visually enchanting, fantastic photography, true story although the adaptation from the book obviously had to leave something out. Incredible training of 35 wolves that took 4 years...for this reason alone the movie is worth 5 stars. See more
