What to Know

Critics Consensus

Win It All finds writer-director Joe Swanberg working in a comparatively mainstream vein -- and striking another collaborative spark with leading man Jake Johnson.

Win It All is a chance to see a handful of great comic actors, Johnson chief among them, milk Swanberg's low-key narrative designs for all the comedy they're worth. Go to Full Review

Luke G Jan 14, 2019 Strengths: Jake Johnson (Eddie Garrett) is pretty fun in everything he does. Even when I watch a movie I donâ(TM)t particularly like involving him, he still manages to shine. That was the case here. He played a charming lead and had some solid chemistry with Aislinn Derbez (Eva). The portions of the movie that involve the gambling are the best part and I appreciated the little popups telling us how far into debt Eddie had fallen. Weaknesses: Ultimately, not a lot happens in this movie. For a story about a guy with a gambling problem, he barely does any of that. Thereâ(TM)s a lot of attention paid to how he handles life with his girlfriend and not gambling, which isnâ(TM)t as interesting. Thereâ(TM)s no real growth for the character either. He gambles again in the end and wants to go too far, but is stopped by a heart attack. He doesnâ(TM)t seem to learn anything. Throw in how many other things arenâ(TM)t answered (the contents of the bag, the stolen phone, etc.) and it just feels like there was no point to watching this. The character work isnâ(TM)t good enough to carry the rest of the movie, which is flat out boring. Overall: I keep watching Joe Swanberg movies and keep being disappointed. He always gets good casts together and the improv intrigues me. However, his films are boring and this ir gith up that alley. See more
Rey S Jan 8, 2019 Some good acting tries to bind a nothing script. No twist , no drama , no cliffhangers, how much was in the bag ? Who's that guy he robs coffee off ? Who stole his phone ? Why a heart attack ? Why didn't he give the bag to bloke who counted it at the end ? And why and this is the big one is it listed as a comedy ? Absolute waste of time and the big loser is me for watching it, 90 minutes gone off my life clock I will never get back. How as this scored so high you freaks See more
Leia W Dec 31, 2018 I watched this movie because it had gambling and because I like Jake Johnson from New Girl. Some part of me told me no because Iâ(TM)d been burned before by Johnson in the unfunny buddy cop movie Letâ(TM)s Be Cops, however, he was pretty decent in his bit-role in Jurassic World so I figured Iâ(TM)d give it a shot. As it turns out, he doesnâ(TM)t have the chops to pull off this movie almost single-handedly. His character, Eddie, is not unlikeable but is also not very relatable. The other characters in the story, from his love interest to his brother to his friends, are either completely flat or erratic and inconsistent. As for the storyline, it was meandering but not very exciting. There was nothing to drive the plot forward and, as a result, the movie drags. What starts with an interesting premise - hand a gambling addict a bag of cash - is made so dull by the blandness of the dialogue and events that the movie becomes tedious. Problems that arise, whether over money or romantic problems, are resolved in a single scene with relatively little drama. Despite what should be a hair-raising medical issue at the climax, the movie peters out so quietly itâ(TM)s not even clear the movie is over. This movie walks the line between indie film and mainstream gambling action movie and is unable to deliver success down either path. Miss this film and you wonâ(TM)t be missing much. See more
