Critics Consensus

Solid work from the cast - particularly a scene-stealing Matthew McConaughey - helps White Boy Rick make up for a number of missed opportunities in the script.

Director Yann Demange ('71) seems uncertain whether to play the material as searing drama or black comedy, and so he gives up on establishing a recognizable tone altogether.

White Boy Rick attempts to be the next great Hollywood film about the criminal underworld. But with its slow pacing and rather unpleasant cast of characters, the crime drama fails to achieve a Goodfellas-level balance of gangsterism and mordancy.

As it stands, White Boy Rick is solid, moving filmmaking, anchored by a bombastic ensemble.

He's a teen helping out the FBI, but gets screwed by being tossed into prison.

Was excited to see this movie as it looked like it would be fast paced thrilling adventure of a kid who starts from the ground up (much like American Made) but it just ended up being a flat movie with a relatively poor plot, great performance Matthew Mccartney

A pretty concrete slab of life.

I enjoyed the story, but it seemed to differ from the focus of the trailers (trailer was informant focused)

There isn't really an in depth analysis I can provide outside of the fact that I vaguely understood what Rick was saying most of the time. The plot was slow and I lost interest.

If the importance of the true story is understood only for some captions placed before the end credits and for other information available online, while director and screenwriters have limited themselves to dwell on the urban, environmental and social degradation of Detroit, then the film has failed in its usefulness.
