When We First Met

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Much like its protagonist, When We First Met struggles in the cinematic "friend zone" -- and will face a slew of viewer breakups before finding much in the way of true love.

It's like being at a crowded restaurant and eavesdropping on the same bad first date over and over and over again. You'd probably want to move tables. Go to Full Review

The potentially problematic premise is narrowly sidestepped because the film zigs when you expect it to zag... This watered-down rom-com doesn't fully deliver but it's a diverting twist on the genre nonetheless. Go to Full Review

How the movie plays with time and its different scenarios elevates it above your average laundry-folding, background noise rom-coms. Go to Full Review

Every tired rom-com checkbox is ticked, but this film still manages to feel fresh, is thoroughly delightful, and delivers pleasant, affable entertainment. Go to Full Review

Anakin W Apr 13, 2019 When We First Met is a fun and easy-going movie. I got a bit lost in the timeline but you pick it up again rather quickly. It has a great cast and I enjoyed the storyline a lot. So, yea, it's a fun movie, nothing too special, but very enjoyable. See more

Finn L Mar 6, 2019 "When We First Met" is an underrated and delightful movie that most people should resonate with. I think most people know how it feels to be friend zoned and have asked themselves, "What if I did it differently?" This movie is a very funny and sweet take on this concept that is reminiscent of movies like "Groundhog Day." I had a lot of fun with this movie. I think it has a great central message and I found myself consistently engaged with the story. I also found myself laughing out loud and hard multiple times, and that's primarily due to solid writing and performances. I think the more you can relate to the movie's premise, the more enjoyment you'll find in the movie. I could see myself in some of the scenarios in the movie and could see people I actually know in the supporting characters. This movie entertained me, made me smile, and taught me a lesson I needed, so I personally feel its a very good romantic comedy.  See more
Draco S Feb 9, 2019 This movie was a romantic comedy; the movie formula is expected to be obsolete and tacky, and the story is expected to be clinical and unconvincing. "When We First Met," however expertly maneuvers its genre with an original climax and resolution. It is refreshingly up to date in its message and unexpectedly contains some gems of monologues. While the dialogue writing maintains an essence of typical rom-com cheesiness, it retains its dignity in its honesty. This movie is easy to dismiss as predictable and formulaic in it being a rom-com, but it unapologetically wears its genre as a title and still transcends it with its plot. Overall a fun and entertaining watch and a significant hint in the new direction of modern romantic comedies. See more
George P Feb 7, 2019 What if Groundhog Day was a cheesy rom-com? Well, it is, kinda, but this is an updated version with cute young people and a fresh, nonsensical plot. It isn't nearly as good as Groundhog Day, but it was fun to watch. If you are bored and your girlfriend likes rom-coms, this is pretty harmless. There is enough humor and self deprecation to keep it fresh, and the acting was decent. With these time loop movies, usually the filmmaker is trying to make a point about destiny, but here it seems almost a useless conceit. Apparently fate wants the male lead to... just keep doing what you were doing. That made no sense. See more
Harry G Jan 28, 2019 Not a bad rom com with some funny moments in a netflix original.
