What to Know

Critics Consensus

Shallow, clichéd, and silly instead of suspenseful, When the Bough Breaks offers nothing domestic thriller fans haven't already seen before -- and done far better.

Han R Feb 14, 2019 Great movie for a Friday night. Full of suspense, incredible acting, and a strong plot. Much better than the original versions that these other people are saying this is a knock off version of. Not sure why these people hate it so much, the story was well thought out and the acting was incredible. See more
Feb 14, 2019 Wow. Story line of the whole movie is incredible and brilliant acting and a strong plot
Abraham S Jan 17, 2019 When the Bough Breaks is a disappointing film. It is about a surrogate mom for a couple becomes dangerously obsessed with the soon-to-be father. Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall give horrible performances. The screenplay is badly written. John Cassar did a terrible job directing this movie. I was not impressed with this motion picture. Draco G Oct 19, 2018 not even enjoyable, so silly it is. The disbelief of the viewer is never lifted, the story has no sense and the characters no development or depth. They change to excuse the plot at the first whim. See more

Han S Jan 9, 2018 When the Bough Breaks directed by Jon Caesar, and it stars Morris Chestnut, Regina Hall, and Jaz Sinclair in a psychological thriller about a married couple that wouldn't be able to have a child together, until they brought a surrogate mother to create a child for them, the problem being, the surrogate mother has a crush on the husband to the point that she's obsessed with him and stalks him. I heard that this movie is terrible from every critic that I follow, except for Brad Jones who enjoys this film in a trashy way. Watching Unforgettable made me want to watch these type of films and have fun ripping them apart. With this however after watching it, I was really mad at it and I rather watch Unforgettable instead. Morris Chestnut and Regina Hall are great in this, and are way too talented to be in this type of film. It was kind of nice that this wasn't your typical stalker kind of film, but I couldn't say it was better that way. That's all I really got for positive aspects, so let's get to why I hate this film. This movie is really stupid that really could've be over easily if there was better sense of communication, and if they take advantage of the discovery that they found of the surrogate mother. It takes itself too seriously in what it's doing that I honestly hope that it was having fun along the way, getting more crazy as it goes, but the film never felt like it goes too far and embraces it. I couldn't care for the characters, it's just silly to watch, and things just happen for no reason that wouldn't be remotely possible. The only time that I actually laughed in this, was the way the climax ended that I thought was hilarious in the way it was executed. Other then that, I couldn't get into it as a trashy film, and I just hate the movie for what it is. See more
