Critics Consensus

When a Stranger Calls ranks among the more misguided remakes in horror history, offering little more than a rote, largely fright-free update to the original.

If you've seen either Black Christmas or Halloween, there's nothing new here: the hyped-up score keeps telling us we ought to be scared, but the suspense feels mechanical and fake. Go to Full Review

I can't help feeling that this updating could have been a little more imaginative -- the only wrinkle on the basic plot is that it uses mobile phones. Go to Full Review

There's something nostalgic and comforting about a teen-oriented 2000s studio horror movie, but I wouldn't say that "good" is an adjective to toss in there to describe this. Go to Full Review

Rey R Nov 7, 2018 Gives lots of suspense. The fear comes from the way it tricks with your mind. Gave me the chills.
Draco R Jul 21, 2018 An insult to the world of cinema itself. I think this is the worst remake I've ever seen in my life, even worse than The Stepfather (2009). It has a very clumsy and dull feeling to it, without forgetting that the characters are idiotic, but the real problem with the film is that it delivers barely any real scares, and it barely sheds a drop of blood. I liked the original from 1979, I thought that it was a chilling cult classic. But this remake shits all over its honor. And for a budget of $15 million, most of the acting, especially Camilla Belle, is fucking awful. Fuck this movie, it's nothing else than an abysmal mess, stay away from this film. See more
Anakin L Jul 5, 2018 Saw this when I was in middle school and decided to rewatch it. Nothing special at all to be honest. It's not scary, the middle act is dull, and the dialogue is amateur in places. See more
Abraham S Mar 4, 2018 An unintentionally hilarious remake that ruins every ounce of suspense it had going for it. It doesn't even come close to the frightening opening sequence of the 1979 original. The acting is atrocious, the direction is flat and uninspired, and the plot is nonsensical. Every moment that attempts to play up suspense is overplayed to a point of annoyance. Loud, overexaggerated music and fake scares are what plague this film, and there is an abundance of those moments. There is never any time to breathe. Sometimes the best form of horror can be found with the pure silence, something this movie can't seem to muster. 1/5 stars See more
Draco S Nov 3, 2017 Nearly no plot and definitely no scares. This thriller takes a long time to take off and when it does...it leaves us with no explanation as to why the whole charade happened! The setting was about the only thing this one had going for it, and that’s saying a lot with an actress as good looking as Camilla Belle...who fell completely flat as well See more
Leia R Oct 12, 2017 This movie is awesome. Even though it has some slow rhytim and (maybe) doesn't equal to its previous version, When a Stranger Calls gave me the creeps and made me rewatch it over and over, in order to surp more of its graciousness in small details. See more
