As wearying as the film becomes in its long, bleak sequences, its uniquely cinematic and emotion-charged experience makes the effort worthwhile. Go to Full Review

Six years after the 7-1/2-hour Satan's Tango, Magyar maverick Bela Tarr makes a stunning feature return with "Werckmeister Harmonies," another hypnotic meditation on popular demagogy and mental manipulation that's a snap at 145 minutes. Go to Full Review

Bela Tarr's style seems to be an attempt to regard his characters with great intensity and respect, to observe them without jostling them, to follow unobtrusively as they move through their worlds, which look so ordinary and are so awesome, like ours. Go to Full Review

Werckmeister Harmonies has emerged from over a decade of relative unavailability and obscurity to find it’s become less of a warning of what we’re capable of and more of a mirror to what we’ve done to ourselves. Go to Full Review

Theodore W Jan 12, 2019 I absolutely hated this. Edited to about half-length it might have been tolerable, but the endless long takes of nothing happening drove me nuts. The critics sure love the emperor's new clothes, though. See more

Kylo M Nov 4, 2017 It is weird and original look at the burden of Eastern Europe in turbulent years during WW2 and afterwards. It is open to many interpretations and is really hard to describe. I think the best way is to silently get involved into the viewing and contemplate afterwards since there is a lot to contemplate about, the director gives you unending food for thought. At some point the system indeed did go wrong as with Wreckmeister harmonic principles in music as uncle Gyorgy is suggesting. See more
Draco P Aug 21, 2017 The dictionary definition of a masterpiece, Werckmeister Harmonies is art at its most expressive, reflecting not only on the need for solidarity and collapse of society, but somehow using a relatively plotless structure to craft a profoundly moving, almost characterless character study. See more
Finn W May 26, 2017 A new kind of cinematic experience which is profoundly affecting for all the right reasons. Despite the long takes and the bare minimum of plot, the duration of time itself becomes an absolute pleasure in the hands of the talented directors, editor, composer, actors and everyone else concerned. Defiantly non-Hollywood and so much the better for it. See more
