Critics Consensus

Matthew McConaughey almost runs We Are Marshall to the end zone, but can't stop it from taking the easy, feel-good route in memorializing this historic event in American sports.

What allows We Are Marshall to stand above many of the other 2006 sports movies is both the undeniable power of the story itself and the strong ensemble McG gathered to tell it. Go to Full Review

Unlike a lot of sports movies, it doesn't end with a championship or a great upset over a powerhouse. The real victory on the Marshall campus was in fielding a team that honored and respected the legacy of the 1970 team. Go to Full Review

We Are Marshall isn't about grief or loss, but how these things can be overcome. It's uplifting, but shallow. Go to Full Review

"Marshall" is such an emotionally charged subject matter that the film works -- even if it doesn't always click. Go to Full Review

George M Feb 11, 2019 When I first saw this I remember feeling like the ending wasn't satisfying and even that Matthew McConaughey's performance was annoying. I don't feel that way anymore. The character he portrays here is definitely a bit socially awkward, but good-hearted and very clever in the use of parable to get his points across. This in turn shows the amazing things that can fall in your lap if you just literally ask for them. Speaking to people is almost becoming a lost art, but if you want something, there are often many ways to steer a conversation in order to get the thing that you want. There is a lot of survivor guilt in this film, and it of course addresses the issues with letting someone go after the loss of a life. None of this is easy subject matter, but it feels like it's handled well. The music selection for the soundtrack is spot on and there isn't any ham or cheese acting to taint the film. Maybe not my favorite, but a good sports film in spite of that. See more
Han W Aug 15, 2018 A true story about coming together to overcome a trategy. Must see for football lovers.
Poe M Mar 24, 2018 "We are Marshall" is a well groomed, feel good, inspiring film that is fun for the whole family.
Sep 23, 2017 A very inspirational & true sports story. I enjoyed it a lot! :)
Aug 13, 2017 It was pretty cliche. A typical sports film where the audience goes crazy when the underdog sports team has some degree of success following a tragedy. IT wasn't terrible, just not great. The black guy who plays the team captain is annoying and unlikable. I wonder how much was true and how much was false. Kate Mara was a good though. A very cute lady. See more
Leia P Feb 5, 2017 Un des moins bons films de football que j'ai vu, mais les autres sont tellement bons... C'est un film correct, sans plus.
