What to Know

Critics Consensus

Part delightfully tense techno-thriller, part refreshingly unpatronizing teen drama, WarGames is one of the more inventive -- and genuinely suspenseful -- Cold War movies of the 1980s.

Like a man drawn to the edge of a cliff by the lure of the abyss below, we're secretly obsessed by the apocalypse. Moralists may claim that WarGames is more exploitation than warning, but it's still an exciting, giddily entertaining movie. Go to Full Review

The chase sequences with government agents are tame but the film builds to a tense (and witty) conclusion at the Cheyenne Mountain nuclear bunker in Colorado Springs. Go to Full Review

Classic humanist-didactic filmmaking, effectively presented as a thriller. Go to Full Review

[WarGames] is a standard ‘80s teens-in-peril and up-against-the-authorities tale, but one which, despite a strange side-trip to an Oregon island, really does a great job of building up the tension towards a thrilling finale. Go to Full Review

Kylo P Jan 24, 2019 Obviously in its time, but boasting enough timeless moments and aspects to make it distinguishable from the '80s mold, this intense cold war thriller is smart, high-stakes, and a solid hit for young Matthew Broderick. See more
Abraham P Jan 23, 2019 WarGames is just a fun, tense, well-paced thriller and slice of early 1980's cold war Americana. Really well cast, with super likeable young stars Matthew Broderick and Ally Sheedy, matched up against always perfectly smarmy Dabney Coleman with a dash of Barry Corbin's military moxie. This movie belongs in a time capsule of 1980's classics. The music is well done, the supporting cast is terrific. It even feels somewhat plausible that a young, gifted underachiever could accidentally hack into the U.S. military computer to play a fantasy wargame, and instead almost start world war III. Nothing was more terrifying at that time than the prospect of WW3. This is simply an underrated, enjoyable thriller that helped launch both Broderick and Sheedy, and is better than several other cold war thrillers of that era. I never get tired of watching Broderick outsmart federal officials with his ingenuity. See more
Harry G Sep 22, 2018 One of the best movies I've seen, very good. It had a captivating story, good characters and good actors; This film was the first good teen movie, which came to give rise to other films from the 80s such as "The Breakfast Club", "Back to the Future", "Ferris Builer's Day Off" and "The Goonies". Highly recommend. See more
Luke L Jul 21, 2018 A good movie, even if it is a prime example of one of my biggest pet peeves in movies: Having a cast entirely made up of men, with one random woman thrown into it who serves the plot in no way other than giving us something to look at. Essentially, a complete failure of the Bechdel Test. See more
Luke G Apr 30, 2018 A very dated '80s movie that is paradoxically very ahead of its time. The deeper themes - namely about the futility of nuclear war and the inevitable dangers of computer intelligence - are issues that still manifest over 35 years later. See more
