In an ordinary suburban house, on a lovely tree-lined street, in the middle of 1970s America, lived the five beautiful, dreamy Lisbon sisters, whose doomed fates indelibly marked the neighborhood boys who to this day continue to obsess over them. A story of love and repression, fantasy and terror, sex and death, memory and longing. It is at its core a mystery story: a heart-rending investigation into the impenetrable, life-altering secrets of American adolescence.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Virgin Suicides drifts with a dreamlike melancholy that may strike some audiences as tedious, but Sofia Coppola's feature debut is a mature meditation on disaffected youth.

The film’s visual style is not in thrall to aestheticised despair, but best understood as an appreciation of the Lisbon girls themselves, a celebration of their lives, fairly unremarkable until they are not. Go to Full Review

And yet a film set in suburban Michigan in 1975, about a quintet of teenage pre-Raphaelite enigmas who take their own lives, somehow remains dreamy and beguiling. Go to Full Review

The Virgin Suicides offers a glimpse into the murky unknowability of adolescence, and its legacy is tied to the portraits of femininity with which Sofia Coppola has crafted her filmography. Go to Full Review

Somewhere around The Virgin Suicides’ third mesmeric close-up of Kirsten Dunst’s teeth and eyelashes you realize these alluring compositions impart so little understanding of Lux Lisbon that we might as well be watching her from across the street. Go to Full Review

George W Jan 19, 2019 Slow paced but get that's part of the ambiance. LOVE the actors in this but the message is just so...depressing & also ridiculous. These sisters lives are not THAT BAD- give me a break already. Romanticizes inane NORMAL adolescence angst in a very unhealthy way. See more
Theodore S Dec 14, 2018 Emotional and clever with writing.
Hermione W Jul 14, 2018 This movie interests me, while sometimes it may seem confusing I think that's the whole point. The director made it seem confusing so that we ourselves could come up with the true meaning of this movie. See more
Finn G May 9, 2018 i never understood why.. The Virgin Suicides It takes guts to pull off such a risky project and not because it is way too dark that it is almost inedible but the makers still keep it light and breezy on the rest of the journey which doesn't come often and shows a sign of greater talent. Sofia Coppola is no short on execution but it rarely factors in or is noticeable for there is too much to work on the plotline. Her adaptation from Jeffrey Euginides' novel isn't smart but still the tone is kept alive that is palpable for the characters that resides in this symmetric world. There isn't much to admire on performance as the cast has done a decent job where Kirsten Dunst and Kathleen Turner may stand out. The Virgin Suicides is a plot driven feature that is so focused on the advancement and the pace of it that the supporting characters may feel a bit undercooked or lack opportunity to factor in, that results into a smaller space for the audience to breathe in. Hermione L Apr 18, 2018 Sofia Coppola's Magnum Opus. Sofia Coppola's masterpiece of film. Her major film debut with Kirsten Dunst starring as the hypnotic girl next door Lux Lisbon. The profound sadness that is portrayed serves to enlighten the general public how even in well off middle class suburban kids can feel depression. It's so beautiful and relatable. I felt the the boys across the street in the movie just looking at the girl you love. Coppola captures young love, heartbreak, depression, affluence, apathy, and leads to suicide. It's one of the most heartfelt films I have ever seen and it remains one of my favorites. Dunst is remarkably empathetic and relatable and Coppola's lens loves her. Try to see this movie as I guarantee you will feel that same emptiness and depression that the characters endure. An indie classic. See more
Rey S Jan 26, 2018 The Virgin Suicides is a talented debut from Sofia Coppola, but it's not necessarily a great cinematic experience. The film suffers from uninspired dialogue, intrusive narration and an unwillingness to pick a tone. Giovanni Ribisi provides voiceover, but never actually appears in the film, and while the story is told from the boy's point of view, the only one we see as an adult is Josh Hartnett, who we get to know the least of all of them. It takes a brave look at the difficulties young people face and the lengths they may go to escape their troubles, but it's never really established how gruelling their lives are. They have strict parents, but the worst they do is give them a curfew and make one of them burn her LP collection. Nothing suggests that they're being pushed to breaking point. It's acted well and the cinematography is nice, but it made little impact on me, and the ending feels so disconnected to the central storyline that it could only have been there to pad the runtime. If you decide to give it a miss, you won't have any regrets about it. See more
