[Takeshi Kitano is] scary, hilarious and, in a strange way, touching. Go to Full Review

Takeshi's cinema is full of static images and long digressions, intermissions from the blood sport. When the inevitable clashes recur, the sudden shots of brutality carry a startling kick to them. Go to Full Review

Luke R Feb 18, 2017 I love Takeshi Kitano and this is his first, and perhaps best film as a director. It's unflinching in its depiction of violence as Kitano plays a cop unafraid to smack people around to get what he wants. Kitano also has a distinct style, and I think it is evident here in this first film. The story is nothing new, but it is how its told that makes it compelling along with Kitano's tough guy persona that makes Dirty Harry look soft. The is a must watch in my opinion. See more
George L Sep 21, 2009 Takeshi Kitano's debut is a fireball, a cinematic tour de force of pure fury. He plays a cop named Azuma, who sometimes lets his emotions get the best of him when he beats down on suspects. His superiors don't approve of his tactics but they make sure to keep him in line. Azuma has to keep tabs on his mentally ill sister, as well as take on the scum of the city. The movie is like a boiling pot, it simmers for most of the film, when explodes with a giant explosion of violence. Swimming in moody noirish atmosphere, music, and definitely inspired by Dirty Harry (1971), Violent Cop is one of the best film debuts, and a crackling crime thriller. See more
