Critics Consensus

An unpredictable scary thriller that doubles as a mournful meditation on love, loss, and human comfort.

Once it switches over to us getting inside her head... I started seeing it more as Judy's story than Scottie's. Go to Full Review

Alfred Hitchcock tops his own fabulous record for suspense with Vertigo, a super-tale of murder, madness and mysticism that stars James Stewart and Kim Novak. Go to Full Review

Stewart had never before allowed himself to be so unlikable, Hitchcock had never exposed his own attitudes toward his leading ladies so openly, and Novak gave the performance of her career. Go to Full Review

A film about doppelgängers that's a total doppel-banger. Alright, that's terrible, but what's left to say about Hitchcock's spellbinding masterpiece at this point? Go to Full Review

Harry S Mar 16, 2019 The Hitchcook masterpiece
Kylo Feb 6, 2019 This film's ascent of the respected "Sight & Sound" greatest films list, first appearing in '82 and reaching #1 in 2012, mystifies me. Don't get me wrong: I love the film, I have it on DVD, and there is much to admire it, particularly the cinematography and production design, which are sumptuously gorgeous. And the film does shoot for a certain baroque grandeur in its involved and semi-gothic story of betrayal and love vs. possession. That said, it's overlong, scenes drag, the central con being played is laughably involved, and Stewart and Novak both seem miscast (although I've read that Hitch chose Novak because she was so blank that you could project whatever you want on her, as Stewart does, and it certainly works from that angle). Again, I'm not knocking the film. If you're a fan of Hitchcock, Stewart, or breathtaking cinematic design elements, by all means see it. But the Greatest Film of All Time? Someone at S&S needs to explain that one to me. It wouldn't be first on my list even if we were confining ourselves to the films of Stewart -- I'd recommend "Philadelphia Story," "Harvey," and "Anatomy of a Murder" ahead of this. And if we're checking off Hitch's greatest films, I'm not sure this one makes my top ten. It certainly isn't going ahead of "Lady Vanishes," "39 Steps," "Rebecca," "Foreign Correspondent," "Notorious," "Rear Window," "North By Northwest," or "Psycho," and I'm not sure I'd put it ahead of "The Birds." Wonderful stuff. A lot to enjoy and chew on. Just not the greatest film ever made. I'll be curious to see what S&S has to say on their next list, due in 2022. See more
Rey W Jan 25, 2019 I really don't like the bothersome lasting effect the scream at the end gives, but I can only assume that's what Hitchcock wanted to do. See more
Han L Jan 25, 2019 Technically excellent and full of complex symbolic meanings.
See more
Rey G Nov 29, 2018 What a movie! Hitchcock really is the master of suspense. It is a slow burn of a story and yet it manages to confuse you a lot in order to believe every possible outcome. The performances are yet again exceptional but the plot is so complicated. You actually come to a point where you are not sure what to make out of it, everything seems possible, until you come to the conclusion and everything is explained. And the fact is you accept the explanation, because it makes absolute sense. Hitchcock has woven this story in such a way, where you can't possibly defy it. "Vertigo" feels quite long sometimes, but it's so much rewarding by the end. I think I'm gonna love the Hitchcock filmography! See more
