The long frame suits Thomas's preoccupation with the mountainous terrain and the movement of human bodies across it, which are beautiful to witness but can't compensate for the story's ever-dwindling momentum.

An epic of desperation, clotted emotions, racism and innocence destroyed, "Vazante" is chillingly beautiful and thoroughly awful, stuffed with grief and tragedy while wrestling with the dynamics of power.

The various interpersonal dynamics at play, though manifested quietly, manage to evoke modern conflicts nearly effortlessly, and in this way the film succeeds as a meaningful journey onto the plantation.

This deliberately paced Brazilian historical drama rewards patience with its sumptuous black-and-white cinematography and affecting story of prejudice that carries contemporary resonance.

You need patience to watch this.

Possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. It was slow and drawn out, at times it was painful. I began to count the fades to black as a way to make it to the end. Subtitles were unnecessary, it was virtually a silent film.

A beautifully filmed B&W period piece that is timeless in the sense that it addresses systems and cycles of oppression in which even today we are caught up in. A film about a girl told from the perspective of a woman, director Daniella Thomas, the audience is respected intellectually as if reading a novel, in which the characters motives and desires are implicitly revealed. A rare and special contemporary film. I highly recommend "Vazante".
