In West Canaan, Texas, high school football reigns supreme. When starting quarterback Lance Harbor (Paul Walker) turns up injured, the Coyotes' ruthless coach, Bud Kilmer (Jon Voight), must promote benchwarmer Jonathon "Mox" Moxon (James Van Der Beek) to lead the team in its quest for a divisional title. Suddenly thrown into the spotlight, Mox must deal with the pressure of carrying the aspirations of an entire town on his shoulders, as he struggles to pursue his own very different dreams.

Critics Consensus

This is a predictable football movie that lacks intensity.

Now, 25 years later, even when realizing that maybe the heroes of this story shouldn’t have their faults laughed off so much (Tweeder really should be in jail), there’s still a lot of good left.

"Lacks Intensity," says RT. How wrong is that? Well very, in terms of mainstream high school FB films this is one of the better ones by far. It's nowhere as pretentious as Remember the Titans or cheesy, it's a realsitic and fun yet brutal at times look into high school football and how it's both fun and rough to deal with, more on the former. This movie is a 90's flick to it's core but it's unashamed of it. It manages to never let up and make the most of what it had. Vanderbeek manages to work extremly well and has that QB poise to him. All of the players do. Larter steals the show as the babe of the movie.. damn it's a shame she never had more big sexpot roles. Voight's the key that makes the movie work. He's such a dick that no matter what he does it's rievting and when he finally goes down at the end it's gold. One of his better roles. He works well with the then kids and doesn't steal. In terms of Football films it's def in the top 5 with '74 Longest Yard and the Replacements.. RIP Billy Bob!

When it's football time in Texas you think of this movie. It captures the game in this state so well! Van Der Beek and Walker shine in their roles while Jon Voight shows why he is a boss in Hollywood. I'd shoot up cortisone for his ass any day of the week. Also, this soundtrack kicks ass! AC/DC Thunderstruck may be the best song ever for football! To find out what we'd do if we saw our teacher stripping at a club, check us out at broforcesquad.com

While it has strange tonal shifts, Varsity Blues has a great sense of humor and a nice dramatic heart that don't mesh well but are both done wonderfully.

Predictable as it may be, the lead is too charming and Jon Voight is spectacular.
