Born to poor parents, Becky Sharp (Reese Witherspoon) has always aspired to be a member of England's upper classes. Leaving her boarding school and best friend, Amelia (Romola Garai), behind, Becky associates herself with the Crawleys, eventually falling in love with their son, Rawdon (James Purefoy). The marriage is happy at first, but deteriorates when Rawdon's fortune dwindles. Becky is then supported by the lecherous Marquess of Steyne (Gabriel Byrne), whose motives are less than pure.

Critics Consensus

A more likable Becky Sharp makes for a less interesting movie.

Olivia Cooke's interpretation is probably the best Becky Sharp yet: She's intensely charismatic, with a little more bite, and toes the line between being faithful to the book and teasing out more modern feminist themes a little more smoothly. Go to Full Review

This Vanity Fair delights the eye, but Nair may be too much the humanist for her own good: she hasn't the instinct for the kill. Go to Full Review

The film is one that gains from being viewed multiple times over the years and that has aged beautifully well. Go to Full Review

The brilliance of Nair's vision is how she takes the images, references, and suggestions of India latent in the original text and brings them to the ultimate fore. Go to Full Review

Directed by Mira Nair, although sumptuous in scope thanks to the sets and costumes, the film is convoluted and confusing. Go to Full Review

George G Feb 17, 2019 She lacks that bite. Becky is supposed to be manipulative and mischievous. Reese does not convey this very well. The newest 2019 TV series is so much better. This movie was dreadful and boring. See more
George S Aug 14, 2018 Aburridísima. Los personajes son planos y la historia no va a ningún lado. Dos horas muy mal invertidas.
Anakin W Apr 9, 2018 A heavily pregnant Reese as Becky Sharpe makes nonesense of the plot.
Draco R Oct 1, 2017 No la vean ni por accidente en NETFLIX.
Draco M Jul 12, 2017 When we see a male and wealth dominated world, we don't let our class come between what we want and wish to go explore when remaining in such low places we see all well what it is like in high places when it's in us. When we see we have the same tastes, and sounds that make us all dwell in the bask fullness of wealth to see eye to eye with those who don't see us that we naturally see our opportunity to climb higher in all there is available for women to explore. When we are finally seem for who we are, we see we did it to never return to such low places again, to sacrifice love we lost for a life of imprisoning self delusion. When once we are seen we no longer can be what we once were, unless we are given a second chance to see life again with others. When we see we can naturally get lost in the vanity that we bring and get us places that we lose focus on who we are and what we are like on the inside thst is worth exploring even further. See more
