Famed monster slayer Gabriel Van Helsing (Hugh Jackman) is dispatched to Transylvania to assist the last of the Valerious bloodline in defeating Count Dracula (Richard Roxburgh). Anna Valerious (Kate Beckinsale) reveals that Dracula has formed an unholy alliance with Dr. Frankenstein's monster (Shuler Hensley) and is hell-bent on exacting a centuries-old curse on her family. Together Anna and Van Helsing set out to destroy their common enemy, but uncover some unsettling secrets along the way.

Critics Consensus

A hollow creature feature that suffers from CGI overload.

It's this relentlessness of the action and technology that make the film more of a simulated ride. I wouldn't have boarded.

What's left is a world of industrial Gothicism, nightmare morphing effects, ahistoric gadgetry and Breughel-lite grotesquerie.

The exteriors are fantastic, the castles mega-looming, and there's a beautiful -- if fanciful -- masqued ball which shows off to perfection the costumes contrived by Gabriella Pescucci.

Between its spectacular production design, excellent makeup work, interesting visual effects and ambitious story, "Van Helsing" feels like an inflated, epic, varied and fast-paced adventure. [Full review in Spanish].

This is Indiana Jones meets Hammer Horror - the relentless action is blended with a knowing undercurrent and dramatic gothic styling.

Once again I'm left utterly stunned at the low score given by the dumb 'critics' chosen by Rotten Tomatoes. This movie is highly entertaning, with an imaginative storyline and great thrills througout. A must-watch for those who like the Fantasy genre.

On the one hand, the movie clearly aims to establish a sort of steampunk James Bond franchise, impotently suggesting a lame mythology and backstory that (thankfully) will never come to fruition; on the other hand, the filmmakers must have intuited that this pseudo-gothic garbage would never earn a sequel, since they mash together a whole Dark Universe worth of CGI monsters in here, like Frankenstein in a way that never remotely comes alive.

Not the best movie out there or even the best portrayal of Van Helsing, with a ton of strange CGI and corny acting (mostly on Dracula/Bride parts). If you just want a fun past time you might want to skip out on this one.

A real guilty pleasure film. Entirely predictable plot but one that could have been linked with the Fraser Mummy films to create a far better universe than the more recent Ham fisted attempt

The intro is brilliant in my opinion. It gives a first impression of what to expect from the movie from the very beginning. But from there everything went downhill: The story line became an utter mess. Action scenes between ridiculous and completely out of place familiy conflict stories. We do have these kind of action flicks everywhere but all of them have at least enjoyable action, jokes or at least some climaxes. The only thing you get here is people flying through the air and anticlimactic action story telling. Has been a while since I didn't finish watching a movie, but this one is horrific and awkward to me. The movie just doesn't work.
