What to Know

Critics Consensus

If it doesn't reach the heights of director James Cameron's and star Arnold Schwarzenegger's previous collaborations, True Lies still packs enough action and humor into its sometimes absurd plot to entertain.

As an action film, True Lies is scarcely more than a retread of Commando. Go to Full Review
Anthony Lane The New Yorker Dec 10, 2025
The tale begins and ends in a flurry of joke violence; Cameron has decided to spoof what he used to take seriously, and the result, though bright and deafening, feels oddly slack—he loosens the screws, and our interest drops away. Go to Full Review

Schwarzenegger handles this comedy with a deft touch, but he can still knock heads and glare his trademark glare, which is played for laughs here. Go to Full Review

Even without a sociopolitical analysis, this bloated film isn’t as fleet-footed or perpetually exciting as the material warrants. Go to Full Review

Let's face it, James Cameron knows how to make a mean action movie. Sure, it's not the deepest movie you're likely to ever see, but boy is it a fun ride. Go to Full Review

Luke S Jan 18, 2019 When action movies were action movies. Verges on the daft, but is well done.
Hagrid R Oct 3, 2018 True Lies has a forgettable first act and an overly action-oriented third act, but the second act is where the film shines the most thanks to a terrific mix of situational comedy, strong dialogue, great chemistry between the two leads and a solid script. It's one of James Cameron's better films featuring a terrific Jamie Lee Curtis performance while also showcasing stupendous Arnie who here gave the only really good performance of his career. Sep 5, 2018 A bit long and ridiculous, but semi entertaining
Finn S Jun 30, 2018 Absolutely one of Arnold Schwazenegger's best movies. Such an awesome movie. Everybody must see this one. Also one of James Cameron's best movies. Really love this movie so much. See more
Anakin W Jun 18, 2018 purposefully ridiculous and action packed true lies works as an action comedy with an insane premise
Albus R May 24, 2018 Great action and Jamie Lee Curtis make this film enjoyable but between them they only just succeed in covering over the cracks. On balance I would have expected better from a James Cameron / Tony Scott COLLABORATION. See more
