What to Know

Critics Consensus

Girded by strong performances from Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and newcomer Hailee Steinfeld, and lifted by some of the Coens' most finely tuned, unaffected work, True Grit is a worthy companion to the Charles Portis book.

I thought the film was excellent... [But] Don't skimp on the development of female characters just because the complexities are difficult to represent. We're going to notice. Go to Full Review

Henry Hathaway's 1969 adaptation was highly faithful... The Coens' movie is less faithful than Hathaway's but stronger - the production, by their regular team, is formally superb - and weirder. Go to Full Review

Disappointing overall, though entertaining at times, True Grit isn't exactly the Coen brothers best movie but they get an A for effort. Go to Full Review

A film by the Coen brothers that rekindles, in a fascinating way, the fuse that was extinguished in revisionist Westerns. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Apr 23, 2019 While the Coen Brothers are known to have almost outlandish storytelling, this one is very straightforward. With westerns having a resurgence in recent years, this still keeps intact what was the 60s era of western style. This is the best true western since The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. Bridges is always a good fit for cowboy as is Brolin, so its a match made in paradise See more
Hermione S Apr 3, 2019 Has some slow moments but truly a must-watch for all western movie fans. Jeff Bridges encapsulates a Clint Eastwood type and it's a pleasure to see it. See more
Finn W Apr 1, 2019 True Grit is a western remake directed by Ethan Coen and Joel Coen who are two of my favourite directors at this time. The film stars Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie and Jeff Bridges as Marshal Reuben J. Cogburn. The acting in the film I found was really good and realistic especially from Jeff Bridges as Marshal Reuben J. Cogburn I personally think that he gave a gritty but loveable portrayal of the character. I also have to say that Hailee Steinfeld as Mattie was a really good casting choice. At this moment in time she is among the best child actors I have seen. The film also co stars Matt Damon as La Boeuf and Josh Brolin as Tom Chaney the bad guy of the story. The characters in my opinion were written well and enjoyable to watch especially Marshal Reuben. There were a couple points in the film where there characters were a little too much but I didnt really find that as a problem. The cinematography was strong and gave the film some slow but beautiful shots. I especially like one shot were Mattie is inside a cave looking outward. The setting like most Coen brother films is very good and gives the era/destination a very realistic feel to it. The set design and props in the film is down to the point from the guns to the building design. The costume design like the set design is to the point and fits the era extremely well. The style of the film like most Coen brother films has a rustic but beautiful colour design. The film has some very good special effects especially with the blood and action. The other special effects are good but not as strong as with the action. The film does also have some good CGI along with the special effects. The action is pulled off really well from the special effects to the tension. My personal favourite action scene in the film takes place in a cabin with two other people played by Paul Rae and Nicholas Sadler. The film I noticed also had some very good sound design from the gun shots to the sound of people hanging. The Coen brothers I find are really good with dialogue and using the correct words to use for the era. Some of the music in the film I found was sometimes to overwhelming which put me off a little bit luckily the film doesnt have too much music. The story of the film follows Mattie trying to avenge her fathers murder by hunting down the man who killed him. Along the way she pays the Marshal to help her track down her fathers murderer. The film also has some very good comedy especially from Jeff Bridges. The film at points also has some strong atmosphere especially toward the end. The film surprisingly is also quiet emotnial toward the end. There are a couple other things wrong with the film but it doesnt take away too much. Over all it is a very enjoyable and well made film. So that is why I give it a 8/10 - worth paying for two tickets See more
Theodore W Mar 2, 2019 As someone who desperately does not enjoy Westerns, I absolutely loved this film. I have been putting this one off for quite a while, but being a fan of the Coen Brothers I decided to finally give it a chance. I was extremely pleased, aside from the film being filmed so beautifully the storyline was so enthralling, Hailee Steinfeld was a tour de force that left me in awe when I discovered this was her cinematic premiere. Matt Damon and Bridges both also bring extremely impressive performances, but that's to be expected from two seasoned veterans. The plot was extremely satisfying, the only reason I didn't give this movie a full rating is that I felt the ending falls a bit flat. It's not surprising, and some may even say the ending was brilliant, but I expected a little more of a resolve. Not a terrible ending in any sense, just wasn't what I was expecting. I loved this movie and not only would I watch it again, but I would also actively seek it out and push others to see. See more
