That gold changes the character of men who are fortunate enough to find it is the central thesis of this curiously powerful production. Go to Full Review

Unlike most studio releases of the era, the film's depiction of wretched moral depravity is not sweetened by a studio ending, where, say, the ugly impulses of greed are suppressed by a higher moral calling. Go to Full Review

Wildly unconventional for its time, it makes its A-list star a villain, there's no romantic subplot, and it's far grimmer than most movies of the age. Go to Full Review

George S Apr 23, 2019 A morality tale of greed and gold in the vein of Conrad, with the machismo bravado of Hemingway, and the progressive sensibilities of Steinbeck, told with a mix of Golden Age Hollywood royalty and New Hollywood cynicism, self-reflection, and intimacy. The film has a wealth of invaluable performances---especially Huston the Elder, who is the paragon of prospectors, and Bogart playing against type by perpetually losing his cool---and rich dialogue, mining its source material for the madness mammon begets. What, then, is the fabled, titular treasure? Certainly not gold, as evanescent and cold as the sand whipped around by a norther; no, rather it's the friends made along the way, transient but intrinsically more worthwhile. See more
Rey W Feb 23, 2019 Fred C. Dobbs and Bob Curtin, both down on their luck in Tampico, Mexico in 1925, meet up with a grizzled prospector named Howard and decide to join with him in search of gold in the wilds of central Mexico. Through enormous difficulties, they eventually succeed in finding gold, but bandits, the elements, and most especially greed threaten to turn their success into disaster. Stars: Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston, Tim Holt. Classic '40s tale of greed, betrayal, and murder. Bogart is phenomenal as Fred C. Dobbs, a decent guy destroyed by his lust for gold, and the film itself is one of the immortals of cinema. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre is a superior morality play and one of the best movie treatments of the corrosiveness of greed. Huston keeps a typically light and entertaining touch despite the strong theme, for which he won Oscars for both Director and Screenplay, as well as a supporting award for his father Walter, making Walter, John, and Anjelica Huston the only three generations of one family all to win Oscars. One of those films anyone who calls themself a movie buff must surely have on their list. See more
Abraham S Nov 5, 2018 I'm embarrassed as a Bogart fan that I've never seen this film until now. Oh, I know the line by heart. Everybody does. Bogart is awesome as the loud-mouth Fred C. Dobbs. Huston has adapted quite the morality play. Classic! See more
Rey R Oct 26, 2018 This story of greed is one of the best stories ever made. It has a dark humor to it. It shows a man's greed and that can it turn a person into. See more
Hagrid S Sep 17, 2018 The Movie itself is a grand film. Covering all sorts of peril it shows so many aspects of the human condition over the course of two hours. The films legacy is certainly one that remains to this day. With it being referenced in movies such as UHF, and even in the video game Fallout New Vegas, and many others, this film is one that has stood the test of time. I mean, if you have ever hear the phrase, ' We don't need no stinkin' badges' then you should know it came from this film. Although the monochromatic nature of the film may turn many moviegoers off these days, it is not one to ignore and can be truly considered one of the greatest films of all time. http://latetothegame.blog/2018/08/30/key-movies-of-my-life-the-treasure-of-the-sierra-madre-1948 See more
Poe M Jul 1, 2018 procrastinating the humane accuracy and lunacy.. The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre 4 Out Of 5 The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre is a tale about three partners going after the treasure and the irrevocable journey or adventure that it brings along with it. The inner politics depicted among the greedy friends and the good old "morality" conflicts that it raises, is the ingenious yet simply sensible take of the makers especially when the heat is communicated directly to the audience, it gets better as it ages on screen. It is rich on technical aspects like sound effects, background score, editing and art design. The primary reason the feature offers a satisfactory outcome is that not only is it unpredictable but is justifying with genuine reasoning which is the soul in here. The structure of the script may be familiar but its additional and side characters does make it worth keeping the audience engaged offering them enough work and art to explore in it. John Houston; the screenwriter-director, uses its smart adaptation wisely and brilliant execution skills on creating the anticipated vision on screen. The performance is decently acted by Humphrey Bogart and Tim Holt but the real gem of the feature is Walter Houston who gives a memorable performance as a supporting cast. The Treasure Of The Sierra Madre is an interesting take on morality while procrastinating the humane accuracy and lunacy on its backdrop that ticks loud and clear all through the way. See more
