Critics Consensus

Like a colorfully overengineered gewgaw on the shelf, Toys might look like fun, but its seemingly limitless possibilities lead mainly to confusion and disappointment.

The failure of Barry Levinson's Toys is of a different order: it's the kind of folly only a very fine filmmaker could make, a labor of misguided love. Go to Full Review

The production design deserves Academy recognition. But at the most fundamental level, Toys is a film not quite sure what it's about. Go to Full Review

Ron W Sep 24, 2018 In my opinion, this film is massively underrated, maybe simply because my taste is different than most other people's. First of all, it's meant to be absurd and I can surely say that not everyone enjoys surreal, weird stuff. The beauty of this film is its aesthetics, there's creepy toys, there's crazy interiors and hauntingly empty landscapes that look like surrealist paintings, all filled with bizarre childlike characters. When you add music by Hans Zimmer and Trevor Horn on top (for those who like 80's sound), and you have a pleasure for the eyes. See more
Luke R Sep 2, 2018 Barry Levinson's labour of love about the battle royal of a war toy-making militarist and his peaceable toy designer nephew is a vividly variegated muddle aspiring to be a fun riot. See more

Abraham S Dec 13, 2017 Movie was way too long. You can feel it lagging and it gets boring.
