What to Know

Critics Consensus

The scenery and the stars are undeniably beautiful, but they can't make up for The Tourist's slow, muddled plot, or the lack of chemistry between Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie.

Jim Schembri The Age (Australia) Dec 27, 2010

A bland, badly directed, star-driven cinematic molestation of Jérôme Salle's tight-as-a-drum 2005 French thriller Anthony Zimmer. Go to Full Review

This should be a potent combination, but it turns out to be a fizzer. Go to Full Review
Paul Byrnes Sydney Morning Herald Dec 22, 2010
The tone is lightly comic, the dialogue flirty and amusing but the performances are unengaged. There's no floor of reality, as there always was in a Hitchcock film, even his light confections. Go to Full Review
Yasser Medina Cinefilia Aug 18, 2026

It's a dull, tedious romantic thriller with clumsy twists, serving only as a banal pretext to reunite the chemistry-less couple Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp amidst cosmopolitan elegance. [Full review in Spanish] Go to Full Review
Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Aug 3, 2023
2/4
With a dash of humor and some Hitchcock-esque directorial flourishes, the film’s scenario could have been fun. But the production takes the lazy approach and leaves the viewer palpably aware of it. Go to Full Review

But even with its good-looking cast and locations, “The Tourist” is too shallow, too flat, and ultimately forgettable. Go to Full Review

Apr 10, 2019 An easy watch, storyline was interesting. Although the two charcaters lacked chemistry and the plot was insanely unrealistic, it was still am interesting watch. See more
Kylo S Apr 7, 2019 I enjoyed it, even though the plot was rather predictable. Although Depp's face looked like hell warmed over.
Leia L Feb 5, 2019 I'll never understand why the critics ravaged this film the way they did. Yes, the idea of the character's extreme plastic surgery as a form of identity protection is a bit far fetched - but no more so than many others plot points in many more successful movies. Jolie is gorgeous in the film - and the costume design is reminiscent of Faye Dunaway and other great iconic movie stars in glamour roles. The dialogue is great, sometimes clever, at times hysterically funny. I think that Depp has great chemistry with Jolie once he drops the :nervous schoolteacher act - and the cinematography of Venice is unbelievably romantic. See more
Finn G Jan 22, 2019 Something I watch again and again. It may not be the most original plotline, but it has humour and glamour. Some of my acquaintances are easily able to guess at the ending, where others have no idea. Timothy Dalton is an excellent addition to the cast, but the character Guido is possibly my favourite, small as his part may be. See more
Harry M Jan 9, 2019 As preposterous wannabe Hitchcockian thrillers go, this one is adequate. After a slow start, things move along at a clip sufficient to keep most viewers interested, if not completely engaged. My level of disappointment has more to do with wasted potential than with what's on screen. The behind-the-scenes talent, from the director and screenwriters to the cinematographer, is top-notch. The protagonists are played by two of the most appealing actors of this generation. The supporting cast draws from a deep pool of accomplished British thespians. Yet, despite all it has going for it, The Tourist never escapes from the web of mediocrity that ensnares it. As pointless diversions go, it has some things going for it, but not enough for a wholehearted recommendation. Those who want Hitchcock are better with the real thing - pale substitutes like this one merely italicize how special the legendary director was. See more
Hagrid M Dec 25, 2018 One of the worst films ever made. Boring, confusing and utterly devoid of entertainment value.
