The Top Gun Naval Fighter Weapons School is where the best of the best train to refine their elite flying skills. When hotshot fighter pilot Maverick (Tom Cruise) is sent to the school, his reckless attitude and cocky demeanor put him at odds with the other pilots, especially the cool and collected Iceman (Val Kilmer). But Maverick isn't only competing to be the top fighter pilot, he's also fighting for the attention of his beautiful flight instructor, Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis).

Critics Consensus

Though it features some of the most memorable and electrifying aerial footage shot with an expert eye for action, Top Gun offers too little for non-adolescent viewers to chew on when its characters aren't in the air.

Simply put, this is one of the most entertaining films in recent memory.

Cut off from emotion and meaning, this kind of work has a hollow, nervous weightlessness to it -- decadence without the courage of true decadence.

Director Tony Scott gives the production a nicely polished sheen, although some of the scenes look and sound too much like a combination of Navy recruiting commercials and MTV videos.

40 years on, Top Gun still succeeds at making you feel the need, the need for speed, and it is why it stands tall even today; because it fulfills that need.

This movie excited me going into it. This was supposed to be a masterpiece. What I saw was scene after scene of flights. That was it. There was no clear goal this movie set, and it fell apart the farther it went along

Though cheesy at times, one can not help but enjoy "Top Gun."

I watched this film as many people have insisted I watch it. This film was horrible. There were about eight locker room scenes for no reason. I think they take sunglasses on/off 50 times, I promise I'm not exaggerating. 90 percent positive they didn't have air conditioning on set because every character is dripping with sweat and damp througout the film. The protagonist Maverick is incredibly selfish, reckless, and arrogant. The directors clealry used sexuality in order to make this film passable (kissing scenes where they just lick each other, anouncing a death while a character is wearing tightie whities, and a sweaty volleyball scene made to look like an action shot) Don't listen to your friends, don't make the mistake I did.

One of the best Films I have ever watched, best flying scenes in in the history and one of the best endings

A little cheesy, but still fun with great flight scene action.
