Willem Dafoe is a fine actor and he makes the most of the title role. He emotes the hell out of it, but I sure could not make much sense out of this movie.

If Tommaso was 20 to 30 minutes shorter, perhaps it would be a more palatable viewing experience and would feel less meandering.

Tommaso ends up fulfilling the promise of the foreboding groundwork Ferrara lays along the way (including some distressing real life bear attack footage) but this is, somehow, still a startlingly hopeful film for the director.
