Critics Consensus

In tune with the emotion and tribulations of childhood, Tomboy is a charming movie that treats its main subject with warmth and heart.

Since we are dealing with fresh-faced tweens, we are spared the gender histrionics to be found in the likes of The Crying Game or Boys Don't Cry. Those are indeed bigger films. But sometimes small things can pay off quite nicely. Go to Full Review

Tomboy is a lovely reminder that the French have long been famous for a quite different sort of film-about children. Go to Full Review

Brisk, precisely observed, and bracingly non-preachy in its examination of a very tricky subject. Go to Full Review

All the children in the cast act like real kids, not Hollywood stereotypes; they can be in turn sweet, cruel, petty and forgiving. Go to Full Review

As with her debut, Celine Sciamma has a knack for getting amazing performances out of her young actors. Particularly, Zoé Héran is a revelation. Her portrayal of a confused child (not of her sexuality but the sexual politics) is touching and deeply felt. Go to Full Review

Hagrid R Nov 23, 2018 Tomboy brilliantly reflects what it's like to grow up as a trans man, and perfectly acknowledges the psychological and emotional damage that children experience when they're not allowed to be themselves. His mother's abusive actions are also very true to the selfishness of parental figures when their child expresses transgender inclinations. The fact that audiences had to see the child non-consensually undressed in order to have his gender 'confirmed' by transphobic friends seemed unnecessary and painful, but when a trans movie is written and directed by cis people, I suppose you have to manage your expectations there. It's still one of the best trans movies I've ever watched. See more
Albus R Jul 9, 2017 We loved this piece of French cinéma vérité. Laure moves to a new neighbourhood and convinces her sub-teenage chums that she is Mikael. Things get ever more complicated until the inevitable dénouement. Very convincing evocation of time and place. See more
Kylo R Mar 30, 2012 Very likeable characters. Emma 9/10. Lucy 9/10.
