Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished years earlier. Hoping to solve the mystery of her father's disappearance, Croft embarks on a perilous journey to his last-known destination -- a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan. The stakes couldn't be higher as Lara must rely on her sharp mind, blind faith and stubborn spirit to venture into the unknown.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Tomb Raider reboots the franchise with a more grounded approach and a star who's clearly more than up to the task -- neither of which are well served by an uninspired origin story.

Roar Uthaug (The Wave) directed; his work feels derivative of Steven Spielberg's first two Indiana Jones movies, though not half as entertaining. Go to Full Review

If you're coming to Tomb Raider, you're not coming for the common sense. You're coming for the action sequences. Luckily, Vikander kills in every segment she's in. Go to Full Review

But there's little [Roar Uthaug] can do with Robertson-Dworet and Alastair Siddons's script (derived largely from the "third era" of the video game), which functions like a treasure map without resonance or mystery. Go to Full Review

Tomb Raider hardly proves that videogame movies can stand up there with cinema’s finest, but it is an engaging, exciting film that sets Vikander up well as an action star if she wants to be one. Go to Full Review

Tomb Raider is a step in a the right direction for a genre desperately needing a turn-in critical performance. While nothing to boast about with 34 films in the genre thus far, the 50 percent rating on rotten tomatoes moves the needle up. Go to Full Review

Finn P Apr 28, 2019 Better than average. Appreciated their effort to portray a character who's a little more realistically-vulnerable (and thus a little more relatable). See more
Abraham S Apr 21, 2019 While it has a cliched, commonly-used story in many origins, Vikander's Tomb Raider tells an awesome action-packed tale. Too bad they decided not to bring the iconic physical properties of the game's Lara Croft into the movie. See more
Hagrid R Apr 20, 2019 A forgettable attempt to recreate the most famous video game woman heroe. Prequels are by essence unnecessary, and this one fits just right in that category. See more
Albus W Apr 18, 2019 Mediocre. Poor story development.
Harry W Apr 13, 2019 At least we don't have to put up with Jolie's horrendous acting.
Albus S Apr 10, 2019 What an unnecessary film. I really had hopes for this one. I love Goggins and West (The Shield x The Wire!) and think Alicia is great casting. Too bad the paper thin plot does little with it's talent pool. There is a real lack of compelling character work for Laura. I think a key issue is her father being her motivation then her ally. Once Lara reaches the breaking point where she must kill to survive, moments after that intense scene she runs into her father. I really felt we needed more time for Lara to process the impact of that fight. We never got that. We go from that to Lara and her father trying to stop the bland villain, which all leads to a predictable finish. Then we get teased with a sequel that will never happen. I dig this year zero Lara story from the video game reboot. But lets get to her being a kick ass female answer to Indiana Jones. See more
