Young Nigel Slater (Freddie Highmore) has big culinary aspirations, even though all his mother (Victoria Hamilton) knows how to make is toast. When his mother dies, relations grow strained between Nigel and his father (Ken Stott), especially when he remarries a woman (Helena Bonham Carter) who wins his heart with a lemon meringue pie. Nigel enters culinary school, starts working in a pub and finds himself competing with his stepmother -- both in the kitchen and for his father's attention.

Like its namesake, "Toast" is crusty comfort food with little nutritional substance. Go to Full Review

"Toast" has three things deserving of adoration: spectacular lemon-meringue pies, the songs of Dusty Springfield and Helena Bonham Carter. Go to Full Review

Director S.J. Clarkson seems oblivious to the dissonance; perhaps he's deafened by the music. Go to Full Review

If you love the look and sound of the ’60s, mixed with a doddy story of a charming British gay boy getting his food on, Toast may charm you as much as it did me. Go to Full Review

[Freddie Highmore's] scenes with Helena Bonham Carter, an actress who can play a meaty role like this with her hands tied behind her back, can be great fun. Go to Full Review

Finn G Jan 1, 2019 This was such a quirky movie. And it's not usually the type of film that I'd like, but I really enjoyed it.
Ron M Nov 14, 2017 Was good. It's talented cast gives this story a good pulse. Every minuet of watching Helena Bonham Carter was entertaining as this might be one of my fav performances as the competitive but still hilarious Mrs Potter. See more
Luke S Oct 10, 2017 Not sure on the good reviews here. It's almost good with the mom, but after... there's little to like. Weirdly directed. Not a story meant for the screen. See more
Hagrid R Sep 3, 2017 Heartwarming...Freddie Highmore at his best
Finn W Aug 27, 2017 Enjoyably authentic. But one question remains: Why would you grow a vegetable garden and then only eat tinned vegetables? See more
Abraham S Jun 12, 2017 Toast shows high potential in every aspect yet everything about the movie seems uneven from the range of acting to the hit and miss screenplay the movie itself is extremely enjoyable and the story is presented in an emotionally powerful way but some of the performances seem to flop such as Oscar Kennedy's and then some performances show strong acting such as Freddie Highmore and Helena Bonham Carter although the movie is uneven and some scenes are painfully bad in many departments but toast is still a warm hearted biopic that is extremely quirky and enjoyable See more
