In many ways the ultimate Hawks film: clear, direct, and thoroughly brilliant. Go to Full Review

... it comes down to the superb chemistry between the stars, who fell in love in real life. You can feel the attraction in their scenes together. Go to Full Review

The effortless chemistry between Bogart and Bacall help distract from the fact that To Have and Have Not has little more going for it. Go to Full Review

Draco W Apr 27, 2019 The highlight of this film is the chemistry between Bogart and Bacall.
Albus P Apr 20, 2019 Classic film noir with the legendary pairing of Bogart and Lauren Bacall, the latter giving a truly classic performance of a cool femme fatale and a very beautiful one. The unique atmosphere is very typical of Hemingway's stories, more to that that the film was shot during the war period it depicts. See more
George P Dec 21, 2018 I've never read the book, but given that it was written by Hemingway I have to believe that it is much richer and more nuanced than this movie, even if the screenwriter was the great novelist William Faulkner. Anyway, this is Warner Brothers cashing in on the success of Casablance. They could have done that without Hemingway, Faulkner, and even without Howard Hawks, for that matter. It's a good film, even very good, but misses greatness because it is so reminiscent of its predecessor. To be treasured for Lauren Bacall's fabulous debut, and whenever she's on screen we are mesmerized. See more
Abraham L Sep 21, 2018 saw 1st time on tv PBS 2018. Bacall hot.
Ron L Oct 16, 2017 The first thing that came to mind when I finished watching To Have and Have Not is that it was a film created to try and capitalize on the success of Casablanca. The style of the story, and many of the themes contained in it were similar. It wasn’t a remake by any means, but it had a familiarity that was kind of nice. The performance of Humphrey Bogart is exactly what I want from him. He has that strong and suave nature which gives you assurance that he is always in control. But almost outshining him is Lauren Bacall. She is stunning, and I’m not just talking about her looks. She has a gorgeous singing voice, and massive amounts of charisma. Bogart and Bacall are a great pair and give you something to root for throughout the film. The story doesn’t have the best flow to it, because I often feel like things are going around in circles. They don’t build as much tension as they could. There are a number of scenes where I feel like the risk of discovery should be high, but they kind of shrug it off like it’s no big deal and there’s no danger. It was just a bit odd because I expected more drama in some of those scenes. However, it didn’t really matter for me. To Have and Have Not almost could have been random rambling nonsense as long as they kept that romance between Bogart and Bacall intact. They made this movie a winner for me despite any flaws I saw in its plotting. See more
Anakin G Aug 6, 2017 Some great on-sreen chemistry, and Hawks finely develops the romance between the starlet real-life couple.
