What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may occasionally be guilty of coasting on pure charm, but To Catch a Thief has it in spades -- as well as a pair of perfectly matched stars in Cary Grant and Grace Kelly.

It literally bubbles with humor, spice, sparkling dialogue and baffling complications which keep the moviegoer on tenterhooks right up to the heap big surprise ending. Go to Full Review

It's not one of Hitch's most profound films, but it remains a twinkling, innuendo-laden pleasure, with Grant, Kelly and the French Riviera vying for your attention. Go to Full Review

Francie finds something inauthentic in Robie: "like an American in an English movie". Well, yes, perhaps. But Grant's debonair and oddly unlocatable mid-Atlantic identity is absolutely right for the part. Go to Full Review

To Catch a Thief may not be the auteur's most memorable outing, but it remains a rather enjoyable romp that features two fine performances from its leads, Cary Grant and Grace Kelly, a touch of excitement, and a fair amount of entertainment throughout. Go to Full Review

While the plotting is a bit stodgy, the slyly flirtatious Kelly-Grant patter and gorgeous VistaVision travelogue scenery go a long way. Go to Full Review

See more
Hermione S Aug 30, 2018 If I put this within Hitchcock's ten most known films I might be right, but it's not concidered one of greatest - that's for sure. A man, Robie, is known for doing plenty of robberies. Well, he quit, but when someone is doing new jewlery robberies in his style of work, the police is after him. He get's into a mother and her daughters life and they are stinky rich. Diamonds and pearls everywhere, and yes, they do get stolen. Everyone knows about Robie, The Cat, but he claims his innocence. It's in the very typical style of The Hitch. It's smart, witty, thrilling and mysterious. Grace Kelly is here, so is Cary Grant. The car chase is there - an iconic one, as Kelly in real life tragically drove of the road at almost the exact location and died. The location is amazing, securing great scenery. I like it, but the last 25 mintues or so is a bit off for me and I tire a bit from it. Still, a solid film that is worth a go if you like Alfred and his work. 7.5 out of 10 chickens. See more
Han W Apr 15, 2018 What great way to spend an icy sunday! This may not be my favorite Hitchcock film but it certainly may be the most beautiful. Grace Kelly and Cary Grant were at the height of their "beauty." The setting is Monte Carlo circa 1954 (Grace met Rainer on this location.). Great fun from beginning to end. See more
George G Apr 1, 2018 There's a lot less of that Hitchcockian feel (not so menacing, lighter in tone) that you come to expect from the iconic director, but that doesn't mean it's any less entertaining. Beautifully filmed capturing the French Riviera in style, 'To Catch a Thief' has a plot full of mystery and suspense, two perfect leads in Grant and Kelly, as well as some great supporting characters. The dialogue is also witty, sharp and funny. This is a light-hearted mystery-suspense film with a bit of romance thrown in for good measure, and it just oozes charm. It's very hard not to love it. Poe P Jan 12, 2018 To Catch a Thief isn't Alfred Hitchcock's best work, but how can you dislike a movie starring Grace Kelly and Cary Grant? Nevertheless, two charming leads will only carry you so far, and there isn't quite enough wit or suspense to make up for the undercooked story. I'm glad I saw it, but I'm not going to add it to my list of Hitchcock favorites. See more
Hagrid S Jan 9, 2018 Hitchcock's weak point of the '50s, but it's still good.
