Critics Consensus

A career lowlight for all three of its likable stars, This Means War is loud, clumsily edited, and neither romantic nor funny.

Bathed in bright plastic colours, scored to sleazy jazz funk, This Means War comprises endless short scenes that never quite coalesce into a real motion picture. Go to Full Review

McG directs as if on autopilot, and while the action scenes are technically proficient they're so lacking in energy and momentum you kind of wonder if the adrenaline junkie wunderkind threw them in as some sort of afterthought. Go to Full Review

A film during which very bad things happen very often, and none of them are noticeably funnier than genital trauma brought on by an air rifle. Go to Full Review

Undemanding in the worst ways, the movie’s director and writers have gone to considerable lengths to make this experience as effortless as possible, yet they make it so very difficult to endure. Go to Full Review

This Means War depends on audiences buying into a rather predictable premise of two CIA agents falling for the same woman. Go to Full Review

Finn W Apr 19, 2019 A mix between the films of James Bond and Legally Blonde. Although the James Bond part only serves to justify why there are so many spy gadgets. The villain is practically nonexistent. It is a romantic comedy without fun. The characters look like robots trying to imitate human emotions See more
Ron R Jul 29, 2018 There was good chemistry though out. And as I've said before, Reese is great in anything she does.
Poe W Jul 23, 2018 I usually do not like agent/spy movies at all, this is alright because of the likable cast. I am offended, that the bad guy has to be German again (always Germans, Russians, Asians, how unoriginal and unfair), but at least they cast a German actor not an American actor with awful pronunciation (and by the way: Heinrich is not pronounced Heinrick, just because you repeatedly make fun of foreigners saying "ze" instead of "the" - at least they try, and you make the same mistakes - i.e. if you do speak foreign languages, so cut down the xenophobia. Poe S Jul 22, 2018 I discovered this on UniMás, a Spanish-language channel. This film stands out from the other typical action films it often airs in that it's also a romantic comedy. So with that ludicrous premise, it's advisable to just turn up the volume, avoid actively following the story & characters, and do other activity nearby like check your smartphone. See more
Albus S Jul 5, 2018 This is a horrible, horrible movie i don't think i finished. I actually like all 3 of the actors involved and i was bemused at how annoying this movie was. Avoid. See more
Abraham S Mar 9, 2018 Strengths: The thing that originally drew me to this film is the same aspect that turned out to be the highlight. The main cast is comprised of three fine actors. Reese Witherspoon (Lauren) was her charming self, while Tom Hardy (Tuck) and Chris Pine (Franklin) brought charisma to their roles. The scenes involving Hardy were usually the best of the bunch. Chelsea Handler (Trish) is a fine source of comedy in her small role. Weaknesses: There are plenty of inconsistencies throughout. Lauren seems unsure of herself early, then seems overly confident in the next. It's also not good for this kind of film for the two male leads to have more chemistry together than they do with the object of their affection. Also, too many scenes make no sense. How can these CIA agents just use up tons of resources to spy on each other? Why would other agents go along with this? When she eventually finds out, why is Lauren not more furious? She was mad about the bet, but not that these guys were CIA agents who seemingly knew everything about her. Also, the movie portrays Tuck as the good guy, yet Lauren chooses Franklin. If that was how it would be, they should've made Franklin more likable and done more to establish Tuck's relationship with his ex. Overall: With leads like this, you'd want and expect more. Despite the talent and charm of the trio, this is flat out illogical. It doesn't help that the love stories mostly suffer due to a lack of chemistry. See more
