At holiday time, family matriarch Ma'Dere Whitfield (Loretta Devine) assembles her large brood for their first reunion in four years. However, family ties show signs of strain when various secrets come to light, especially concerning Marine Claude's (Columbus Short) true military status, Quentin's (Idris Elba) debts and teenage Baby's (Chris Brown) secret plans to become a singer.

Critics Consensus

This Christmas features strong performances and a sharp portrayal of family dynamics, but relies too heavily on holiday movie clichés.

Tries to be a Christmas film about real ishoos but it is quite boring and predictable and sentimental and the acting is not very good. It is therefore perfect for Christmas, and upholds all the traditions very, very well.

o matter how silly the situation, each member of the uniformly strong cast creates a nice balance between sentimental and sweet -- which is just how every holiday gathering should feel.

If you like schmaltzy, music-saturated family movies, This Christmas will set all the right bells jingling.

Easily the best film of its genre since 'Soul Food' and definitely makes for a excellent holiday season treat.

Despite an accomplished cast, it's about as surprising as last year's Christmas card.

Nothing new here, but pleasant holiday entertainment with a good-looking ensemble cast.

This movie is a delightful holiday movie. Possibly by far, one of the greatest, and it should go down as a classic. Although the movie seems overpacked, you can't help but fall in love with the Whitfield's and feel apart of their family as their secrets of infidelity, sibling rivalry, and family issues unravel. It's enjoyable and fun nonetheless. Each character adds their own spice to each scene of the movie and it just gets better. Also the chemistry amongst the cast was phenomenal (possibly due to the fact that many worked together on other projects).
