Critics Consensus

An emotionally wrenching, not to mention terrifying, film about the perils of being a teenager.

The script is as overexcited as the girls themselves, and its affirmative ending is unearned. Go to Full Review

It is here that the performances pay emotional dividends. The sight of Hunter kissing her daughter's self-inflicted scars as if trying to kiss away the psychological pain that raised them will haunt me for some time. Go to Full Review

The film remains a searing time capsule of a place, and a timeless elegy for that messy period in girls’ lives that we’re all lucky if we make it out in one piece. Go to Full Review

Leia W Apr 7, 2019 watched this movie when i was 13 and this was wild for me, now as a mother my heart breaks for melanie. good drama film with incredibly talented acting, great direction and story. See more
Han R Jan 25, 2019 Evan Rachel Wood should have won an Oscar for this role. She is beautiful in this film, as are Holly Hunter and Nikki Reed. One of the most powerful films I have ever seen, which captures the complex and self sabotaging anguish that preteen girls feel. That feeling of being not anchored in anything or anybody is embodied in Woodï¿ 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2 1/2(TM)s incredible performancence. And Hunter deserved an Oscar for her painfully nonplussed character Melanie. I cried when I first saw this film at 15 and now at 29 it still moves me to tears. See more
Hagrid W Nov 21, 2018 this wallop of family drama.. Thirteen Hardwicke's peeling of the nature in front of the screen shows much more skin than the audience has a habit to swallow. It is honest, perpetually generous in this gut wrenching dark drama where the storytelling is thoroughly compelling and electrifying. This wallop of family drama keeps you busy in its pop culture bubble whose every aspect is displayed in here. The narration fiddles with the characters aptly for you to feel the heat in the room. In fact, each tiny character is mapped accordingly for it to flow and be aware of the trajectory throughout the course. The camera work is a bit eerie, and it is steady in its own shaky way and on its entire run it can get hectic at times. But with such a sharp and meticulous script, the execution is sincerely unapologetic and jaggedly on mark. It is also a sort of tale that demands performance since at certain point in the feature, the narration relies upon the silent pitches where nothing but performance speaks. Wood and Reed on their parallel role as opposite sides of the coin acting like one with various agendas, both of them controls the environment on the screen appropriately. But the real game changer would be Hunter at the realm of it. Her performance makes you fall deep and deep in her bravura of work. She gazes with purity that cuts through all the hoax and distraction of the this flashy and blingy pop culture world. In fact her character too is the strongest of all in here, it oozes warmth and more importantly humane mistakes against all the bickerings and rifts. Thirteen is an every bit of cinema as far as the problems are concerned but piling up those in front of you creates an enormous amount of pressure for the solution to be equally challenging, and it is breathtaking. Apr 19, 2018 Movie might be disturbing, but it is also informational of how the cruel world is especially with upcoming teens. It is dark, yet kind of personal when it comes to peer pressure and self-image. It seems very realistic especially with how the camera was positioned and how the filming was portrayed similar to the movie Kids. See more
Leia G Jan 10, 2018 An all too real depiction of longing for popularity so much so you are willing to change just about anything about yourself to be deemed popular. Believing she wants the life popularity can offer her Tracy is blind to the fact she is destroying everything and everyone she loves. A teenager girl can give but also take it back just as fast leaving you with nothing but the destruction you created in sacrifice for the thing you wanted most. A wake up call and a must watch. Rey W Aug 4, 2017 Good idea executed terribly. Like one reviewer said its like a valley girl movie masquerading as social commentary. Perfectly put. See 'Kids' instead. See more
