Critics Consensus

They Remain relies on rich atmosphere to effectively establish a sense of creeping dread that's almost enough to cover for its nagging narrative deficiencies.

What They Remain lacks in novelty it more than makes up for in poisonously paranoid atmosphere. Go to Full Review

"They Remain" does what it means to do. It makes the natural feel threateningly alien. Go to Full Review

The whole story, such as it is, seems to exist on the level of metaphor, but even metaphors need some definition and weight to keep us interested. Go to Full Review

The movie is best described as an uncomfortable shroom trip that is not going to deter you from doing shrooms again. Go to Full Review

Suspense and tension aren’t strictly necessary to this kind of Lovecraftian horror, but even so, the film suffocates under the weight of its own portentousness. Go to Full Review

We're left with a dull, overlong nature walk with an experimental art film spliced into its center. That's something less than horrifying. Go to Full Review

Draco S Feb 15, 2019 Not a fan of this movie. I'm not the hugest fan of slow burns but even then, this is a bad slow burn. The story plods along for most of it's 102min run time, very sparingly giving you some interesting tidbits. It makes total sense that this was based on a short story that had no reason to be made into a feature length film. The 2 characters don't have any depth at all. It's not like they used the slow burn to establish a story for the characters, nor does it drum up tension. The one thing I liked a lot was the cinematography... the woods are absolutely gorgeous. Too little happens before a semi-tense ending. In the end, the build up nor they pay off are worth it. I'd recommend skipping this one but if you're a huge fan of slow burns that don't have much depth to them and don't salvage themselves with a great ending, then this may be for you. See more
Abraham S Feb 3, 2019 One of the finest cinematic treatments of the "weird fiction" genre yet attempted! Beautifully shot, deliberately paced, with fine performances and excellent production values for what I assume was a low budget film, They Remain is a particularly effective cinematic take on the increasingly popular genre of "weird fiction"... sort of a combination of an unfolding mystery narrative overlaid with a patina of supernatural horror that is never explicitly laid out, and is all the more effective for it. Personally, I chalk up all the bqd reviews to the fact that half the people in the world are of below average intelligence. If you appreciated Annihilation, Hereditary, and The Endless, you'll probably find something to love about They Remain. See more
Rey S Nov 7, 2018 Looks really interesting.? Cant wait to watch this using boxxy software
Kylo S Aug 17, 2018 If you know Laird Barron's work and get the slow creeping dread of cosmic horror, then you should love this, though it doesn't hold many jump out of your seat scares. See more
Luke W Jul 19, 2018 It was one of the worst movies I've ever watched. Bad acting, directing, cinematography, scripting. Also it filled over 1/2 of the hour and 40 mins with either still shots of ants crawling on a tree branch of the main character staring off into space looking bewildered. I only post this because now I'll never get that 1:45 mins back in my life. Don't make the mistake I did. Save yourselves! See more
Jul 8, 2018 I don't see how the above critics have jobs. The movie has no plot. No story. No depth. The basis of the story had potential. But there was no follow through. The actors we're very dull and the dialogue was very scripted. See more
