Though not the most sure-footed of superhero entries, as an offbeat perspective on the genre, "They Call Me Jeeg" merits an enthusiast's look. Go to Full Review

Comfortable with sleaze but a far cry from being Italy's answer to Deadpool, the pic isn't funny or daring enough to make much of an entry into a spandex-saturated American market. Go to Full Review

Italy finally gets its own superhero, and the results are surprisingly gritty and thoroughly enjoyable. Go to Full Review

... an interesting take on superheroes and superhero mythology as well as on criminals and what really motivates people to do what they do. Go to Full Review

By grounding the whole film in a gritty reality, and basing the film's humor on deadpan absurdity rather than slapstick, They Call Me Jeeg Robot becomes something I've never seen before. Go to Full Review

What superhero cinema really needs is a little weirdness; some unpredictability... and Italy has heard the call and responded with They Call Me Jeeg Robot. Go to Full Review

George P Dec 20, 2018 Enzo is a lonely thief living in present-day Rome. An escape from the police leads him into the Tiber, where he encounters radioactive waste that renders him dismally ill. He continues with his small-time crimes and before long realizes that he has gained superpowers from this fortuitous plunge into the river. Amid an alienated urban landscape gripped by fears of organized crime and terrorist plots, Enzo sets off in search of a crazy gangster called the Gypsy. A gritty and absorbing Italian take on the superhero genre, Gabriele Mainetti's feature film debut premiered at Venice, Rome, Fantasia and Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival; Imagine Film Festival Amsterdam where it won the Silver Scream; and Bari, where it won Best Film in the First and Second Feature Competition. They Call Me Jeeg also won Best New Director and Best Supporting Actor from the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists; Best Screenplay and Best New Director from FICE - Federazione Italiana Cinema d'Essai; and the David di Donatello Awards for Best New Director, Best Producer, Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Editing. http://www.filmatique.com/watch-films/2018/they-call-me-jeeg See more
Finn M May 3, 2018 I've got a say - like 'Deadpool' only better! And its Italian! Has the usual trope of an ordinary man transformed by a toxic event to a superhuman. Yet, it has a lot more heart than most since it spends more time on character development than just endless, mindless violence. But, don't get me wrong, there is plenty of violence, its just that its more realistic than the usual cartoonish, nonstop nonsense in most action films. A little long at almost 2 hours, yet I found it riveting. Worth seeing. See more
Luke M Mar 16, 2018 They Call Me Jeeg is an italian movie about this "superhero". The particularity of this movie is that it came out of a country that doesn't have a superhero movies tradition and that in the last years hasn't seen much good movies, but this is the redemption of Italian movies. The main character, Enzo, gets his superpower in a nice old 60s like fashion: he is intoxicated with radioactive materials and isn't a real superhero, as the first thing that he does when he discovers about his new powers is a theft. Enzo becomes kinda good thanks to the female character, Alessia, who is a girl with serious mental problems that thinks only at this anime, "Jeeg Robot", which is an old mecha anime from the 70s. Without spoiling too much about the plot, I would say that the villain is one of the best that I have ever seen: he is unpredictable, and he could decide to do whatever he wants, like killing a person without a real reason and just for fun, because he is FUCKING CRAZY, so much that he hates Enzo because he wants to be the only "villain" after Enzo's theft that I mentioned before. Another thing that impressed me about this movie is the situation in which the characters are: they have squalid lives, and everyone wants to get out of these kind of lives, included the villain. I would definitively recommend this movie, as it has a very nice plot full of twists, likable characters and is enjoyable, even though it has some serious themes going on, and to support these movies from Italy, where in these times is more and more difficult to find a new nice movie, and still Italian masterpieces like this don't get the attention that they deserve outside of Italy. Also, I know that this is just a personal opinion, but I really loved seeing a superhero with Rome as a background instead of an American, like many superheroes do. See more
See more
See more
