Critics Consensus

Puzzlingly misguided, Neil LaBute's update The Wicker Man struggles against unintentional comedy and fails.

Sometimes a movie hits the rarest of heights, in fact, some may refer to it as a low. A film that's so utterly bad it's actually good. Go to Full Review

In the final act of The Wicker Man, when Nicolas Cage has donned a bear suit, you have to wonder just what it is you're watching. Go to Full Review

Sure, it’s marred by LaBute’s arch discussion of polarized gender dynamics, bizarre decisions from the cast, and an unearned self-seriousness. But it deserves more consideration than mere dismissal. Go to Full Review

Neil LaBute’s remake is a disastrous miscalculation, shucking religion completely and instead fashioning the tale as a battle between upstanding male dominance and wicked feminist doctrine. Go to Full Review

Neil LaBute's knack for biting wit would seem like the perfect fit for remaking Robin Hardy's 1973 classic. Unfortunately what he delivers is an unintentionally funny failure. Go to Full Review

Hermione S Apr 21, 2019 Meticulously crafted and elevated by Nicolas Cage's typically committed performance, The Wicker Man is a rare remake that surpass the quality of the original. See more
George S Apr 2, 2019 boring, predictable, no sex, and a bad ending. so glad I saw this on cable so I didn't have to pay to see it in a theater or rent it on cd. See more
Finn M Jan 9, 2019 The apogee of the "so bad its good" movies The Wicker Man needs to be seen to be believed. This is a hilarious performance by the reliable Nicholas Cage and some of the things he does will make the audiences laugh instead of shudder. Despite retaining significant chunks of Shaffer's dialogue to go along with the basic story structure, LaBute has transformed the eerie, disturbing psychological thriller into an unintentional comedy. At times, The Wicker Man is hilariously bad. When this isn't the result of LaBute's ill-advised "enhancements" to the original tale, it's caused by absurd new lines or Nicolas Cage's bumbling attempts to step into Edward Woodward's shoes. The atmosphere- which is so important for such films is decent but nowhere as daring as the 1973 version. See more
Leia S Nov 30, 2018 Not the best film, but worth watching for the memes alone.
Theodore W Sep 25, 2018 I loved it for all the wrong reasons.
Theodore S Aug 31, 2018 The Wicker Man is a so bad it becomes good movie starring Nicholas Cage as he continues his descent into B movie schlock in order to pay off his tax bills. The film concerns a policeman whose daughter goes missing and he is lead to an island where neo pagans live and thrive. The film has become known for its unintentional hilarity which includes scenes such as Nicholas Cage punching a woman wearing a bear suit and the infamous "not the bees" scene. You can watch this just to see what an unintentionally campy film can be. See more
