A rogue CIA agent (Idris Elba) forms an unlikely partnership with a pickpocket (Richard Madden) to stop a terrorist conspiracy in Paris.

Critics Consensus

Bastille Day proves Idris Elba is an action hero in waiting -- specifically, waiting for a script that deserves his talents.

Elba's magnetic physical presence delivers so much without doing much of anything. But his fans deserve so much better than a couple of dumb quips and a little ultra-violence.

Most of The Take's moving parts feel like spinning cogs, devoid of fit or function.

Yes, it's uncomfortable watching a terror-themed tale in a city that so recently dealt with real terrorism. But if you can get past that, the movie sweeps you along with a brisk pace and even dashes of humor.

This is a woefully plodding film, and director James Watkins and his co-writer Andrew Baldwin show no evidence of recognising how stale their narrative machinations are, nor how compromised are both their aesthetic and ethical choices.

[The movie] falls to bits pretty badly in the home-straight and the story tosses any credibility out the window. But, by that time, the film has earned enough goodwill that you'll be prepared to just sit back and enjoy it until the credits roll.

Good. But you'll have to do a lot of suspension of disbelief. If you do, it's fun. And for fuck sakes give Idris Elba his own thriller à la Liam Neeson in Taken. It's non stop action and most of it is rollicking. A cliché but still watchable.

Just an average film. Good action but totally nothing special

Whilst the great mystery is why Idris Elba keeps getting substandard roles, this is a roller coaster of ride until the plot falls off the edge of the world at the end. A good enough film for a wet Sunday.

Waste of a great actor and overall good cast on a terrible convoluted script just written to have a lot of things happening. If you really wanna see Idris Elba proving his worth as an action star...watch it...otherwise skip.

Pretty good. Not great. Worth seeing once.

The Take is a thriller about a pick pocketer who is caught in a middle of terrorist attack in the middle of Paris France with plenty of plot twists. Idris Elba plays a CIA agent, who works with French Police and the pick pocketer to bring order to the mayhem. I would believe Elba would be the next Bond with his performance, this movie was a mix between Bond, 24 and Taken. It was well filmed with an okay script but Elba was the star of the movie. It was good to watch once.
