What to Know

Critics Consensus

Though its visuals are unique, The Spirit's plot is almost incomprehensible, the dialogue is ludicrously mannered, and the characters are unmemorable.

The Spirit isn't so much the female characters or the cleavage shots, but the fact that they're entirely deployed in the service of a dumb, juvenile fantasy of malehood. Go to Full Review

As an action director Miller is almost as clumsy as Baz Luhrmann, but he's far from naïve, and presumably the delirium of The Spirit is exactly what he intended. Go to Full Review

Miller's background as an artist was undoubtedly an important factor in achieving the striking visual effects. It's just when the human characters dominate the action that the film sinks like a stone. Go to Full Review

Hermione P Jan 20, 2019 Despite stylish visuals, an over-the-top performance from Samuel L. Jackson and a crazy climax full of dakka, The Spirit can't help but feel like nothing more than a poor man's PG-13 Sin City. The movie is unfaithful to its source material, the plot is a mess - something something trunks something something blood of Heracles -, the characters are one-dimensional with melodramatic acting to boot and it really can't decide whether the tone is meant to be campy - laugh at the Deadpool-style injuries The Spirit and the Octopus's clone henchmen suffer - or serious - "My city screams" and "She is my spirit" like an angsty teen writing in his diary of angst -. If you loved Sin City or 300, this movie's going to be a real let down. See more
Poe S Jan 18, 2019 Visually engaging and not much else.
Kylo S Jan 15, 2019 I did not think the movie was as bad as everyone said it was. I thought the younger characters than the other Sin City movies worked well for a younger audience. As the other ones it was visually appearing. See more
Leia W Jul 23, 2018 The best part about this movie is where it was over.
Hagrid W Jul 13, 2017 Adapting the greatest comic book stories of all time should have been easy: follow the source material from Will Eisner. Instead Frank Miller "updates" and "politically corrects" the 1940's and 1950's characters and sensibilities to the ruin of what should have been a very fun movie for anyone to enjoy. Much of the movie is good, but many errors in judgement spoil the sense of humor and make this an "eh" movie. I had such high hopes - enjoy the 1980's tv movie better than this Frank Miller ego trip gone wrong. Wish I could rate it higher but cannot. Casting is enjoyable. See more
Kylo W Jun 28, 2017 I really liked this flick--a visual treat done in very tongue-in-cheek style of a film noir. I especially liked the face off between Floss and Sand. I don't understand why the ratings are what they are. You have to take this for what it is--it's not meant to be Shakespeare.Just enjoy the beauty of its visual appeal and go along for the fun ride that it is. See more
