What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite a solid cast and truly frightening source material, The Ruins founders, thanks to a weak script and an excess of gore.

Smith's singularly bizarre novel managed what this film cannot: fear and sympathy. Go to Full Review

It had me squirming, and the sheer anarchy and amoral chaos involved was refreshing. Go to Full Review

If you are in the mood for some interesting body horror and some laughs at a movie that takes itself way too seriously, this is it. It’s not great, but it’s not terrible, and boy, it’s ironically funny. Go to Full Review

The narrative itself doesn't really offer many surprises, but its special effects makes for a cringe-inducing experience. Go to Full Review

Poe L Apr 28, 2019 This film sucks. All it does is leaves me asking, why don't the villagers just burn the freakin vines? Why don't they learn other languages to help warn people? And why are they vines not releasing spores to populate elsewhere? See more
Mar 1, 2019 I have literally always liked it.Also saw it in cinema in 2008.In my opinion extremely underrated original horror flick with pretty good idea. It's obviously not "Silence of the Lambs" level horror movie.Very different movies in fact. But "The Ruins" had it's thing. See more
Feb 19, 2019 I liked the movie. A lot of the movie was far fecthed to say the least but what horrow movies aren't. I wasn't disaapointed just not the best horrow movie ever. See more
George S Dec 28, 2018 This is what a great horror film should do- It must create a sense of unease among the viewer and not by relying on gore and violence alone. The Ruins is no more a life affirming movie than the book on which it is based is a feel-good page-turner. Scott Smith- the man who wrote the script and the book it is based on understands suspense, though. His other novel A Simple Plan was the source material for the Sam Raimi thriller. Although The Ruins is unquestionably horror, as the central conceit confirms, it belongs to a shrinking sub-category of the genre: adult films more concerned with generating tension and promoting viewer unease than reveling in an orgy of unrelenting violence. In order to appreciate The Ruins, one has to be a die-hard fan of horror or bloody thrillers. Those in that category will discover that The Ruins delivers the goods. It deserves better from its distributor than to have been hidden from critics and slipped quietly into theaters. See more

Ron S Nov 27, 2018 "The Ruins" follows a group of friends who become entangled in a brutal struggle for survival after visiting a remote archaeological dig in the Mexican jungle - where they discover something deadly living among the ruins. The Ruins is a 2006 novel by Scott Smith. Smith also wrote the screenplay. Tense, well set up and directed with intelligence by Carter Smith (who also extracts good performances from his small cast), the film manages the impossible: transforming murderous plants into something scary. The Ruins has virtually no plot, the characters aren't cardboard cutouts and if you're looking for a cringe-inducing horror movie with serious 'Gore' you may actually enjoy it. A very good little horror film with a unique villain--- Murderous plants. I really dig underrated film. See more
