Eric forces Rey to help him hunt down the gang in an unrelenting quest to take back the one thing that matters to him.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Fueled by engaging performances from Guy Pearce and Robert Pattinson, the tension-filled The Rover overcomes its narrative faults through sheer watchability.

Bleak, brutal, and ultimately pointless, the film stars Guy Pearce as a man whose car is stolen and who won't rest until he not only gets it back but also punishes, with extreme prejudice, the dirtbags who took it. Go to Full Review

The Rover equals only sporadically the fraught tension of Michôd's debut, Animal Kingdom (2010), but its horrors feel baked-in and genetic. Go to Full Review

That final surprising coda (it surprised this reviewer, anyway) goes some way towards making sense of the whole mad enterprise. Go to Full Review

Like Rey, 'The Rover' is simple without being simplistic, wandering without being directionless, and solitary without being one-note. Go to Full Review

On paper, it sounds like your everyday revenge drama [...] but writer-director Michôd ensures, from its opening shot to its last second, that the film is anything but. Go to Full Review

The Rover has an intriguing story and an incredible central performance, and even has some wonderful direction with a real sense of grit. But the film’s lack of focus between character conflict and setting fails to create a building connection... Go to Full Review

Poe S Jan 31, 2019 awesome movie. good action, great acting, solid plot
Rey S Oct 12, 2018 Mind numbingly boring. Staring at a blank piece of paper would have been more interesting. The characters are so incredibly unsympathetic I don't care if they die painful deaths. How they continue to get funding for pictures this bad I have no idea. I could've written the script on a coc how they continue to get funding for pictures this bad I have no idea. I could've written the script on a cocktail napkin it he dialogue was so cryptic and bad. If you like a poorly written script, with with no real story line to propel forward if you like a poorly written script, with with no real story line to propel forward - this movie is for you. Theodore L Oct 6, 2018 a pointless bunch of post apocalyptic nonsense
Kylo S Sep 10, 2018 It took all my resolve to see this slightly crappio movie to the end. With this type of genre I like a bit of realism but there's a few idiosincroncies like in reality the three villains would have shot Pierce in the head. Having not done that they would have at least shot out the tyres of his pursuit vehicle. Do me a favour. The acting was good but the screenwriting left a lot to be desired. Too many missed chances like when they escaped they could have taken the Hummers or at least equipment and fuel but no. Also from the way the kid was talking I'd imagine he'd contracted rabies from a dingo or Parkinsons judging from his mannerisms. If petrol was such a valuable commodity you wouldn't burn bodies with it. The dog would also have stunk to heaven and been covered in flies. There's much better films in this genre like The Road. I can't understand all the rave reviews over something as amateurish as this. See more
Aug 27, 2018 Cannot believe that that two good actors (Pearce and Pattinson) would lower themselves to be be in such a poor movie. I suppose I finished watching it in the hope that there would be some redeeming quality. There wasn't one. See more
Theodore G Aug 5, 2018 Yet another Hollywood flop....great start moves into the weird. Robert Pattinson was excellent however but the mumbling was so great throughout the movie, you could barely understand what was being said. The needing of course, once again, was very poor. Hollywood has forgotten hot o make good film, they are interested only in some form of weird art. Mildly entertaining. See more
