Critics Consensus

This psychological thriller's talented cast is undercut by leaden pacing and a problematic plot.

In retrospect, it is Belle who manages to acquit herself best with a role that never quite makes sense, but affords her some expressive, silent sequences. Surely she will find other film work and then quietly drop The Quiet from her biography. Go to Full Review

Perhaps future generations of film scholars will embrace The Quiet as a B-movie that problematizes the oppressive gaze, but for now, it's a misfire. Go to Full Review

While The Quiet is overly stylized at times in an attempt to create an ominous mood, the set design and lighting are no more than minor distractions from the rather unsettling tale that unfolds. Go to Full Review

The Quiet may be a mess, but it's an exceedingly entertaining one, with a host of fine actors keeping their characters on as tight a leash as a film heading for this particular kind of crash landing allows. Go to Full Review

George S Nov 24, 2018 This Movie is one of my favorite of all time!
Han M Nov 17, 2018 The Quiet is a psychological thriller from director Jamie Babbit that takes viewers to darker places than those to which one is typically transported in movies of this sort. The subject matter includes four kinds of abuse: physical, emotional, sexual, and substance. All of the main characters have secrets and/or engage in manipulation, and there's a lot going on in the unpredictable currents beneath the surface. The production is not without weaknesses - there are times when the proceedings become too lurid and the denouement feels unnecessarily protracted - but overall this is a compelling and sometimes disturbing motion picture.(Sometimes disturbing but always fascinating drama).
