Critics Consensus

Creepy and well-crafted overall, The Ones Below marks an auspicious feature-length debut for writer-director David Farr.

It's that plausibility factor that makes The Ones Below so effective.

The film's ultimate reveal is hardly shocking, and that the film spends a gratuitous amount time unspooling it long after it's clear what has gone down feels indulgent and unearned.

The Ones Below is a powerful thriller, a movie that toys with audience expectation at every turn, making it the type of debut Farr will be proud to lead off his resume with long into the foreseeable future.

A solid lead turn from French actress Clemence Poesy and a startling supporting performance from rising Finnish star Laura Birn help make the familiar discomfort of dueling feminine personas a bit more intense.

There are enjoyable moments of unexpected humour (general social awkwardness) as well a nice tautness to the plot's proceedings. Ultimately, however, the film's rather predictable yet overblown ending takes the wind out of its 'serious thriller' sails.

Elements of pastiche aside, Farr's suspense-filled first endeavor behind the camera shows signs of genuine promise.

This movie was messed up!!! You think you know, but you don't know.

What a ride! I've watched this twice now. It's even better than it seems: gripping storyline, beautiful portrayal & symbolism, and frustratingly realistic acting.

Intense movie, bad ending

May 21, 2018

This is a pretty awful film. Even before the weak writing and plot, the way this is shot makes for a jerky and unsatisfying watching experience. Don't waste your time.

This is one of the most unnerving and tense films I have seen in a long time although I would say that viewers with small children will find it more unsettling than those without because it prays on the sometimes confused mind of sleep deprived parents which I could very much relate to! The film centres on a couple and their new neighbours who on the surface seem to be a perfect match for them friends-wise until more sinister behaviour begins to surface but is it all imagined in the mind of sleep deprived parents or do their new neighbours really have a sinister agenda? I thought it was a well written story, some have said the ending was over the top but I liked it. Certainly a film that plays on your mind sometime after viewing.
