What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Magnificent Seven never really lives up to the superlative in its title -- or the classics from which it draws inspiration -- but remains a moderately diverting action thriller on its own merits.

This new take on The Magnificent Seven boasts another A-list cast, but forsakes characters for bloodless, PG-13 action that entertains without resonating. Go to Full Review

As things build toward the long, bloody and by-the-numbers (if ably staged) showdown, it's hard not to mourn for the film this could have been, considering the assemblage of talent. Go to Full Review

It's respectful of the past, while it blazes into the future of a genre that is as American as covered wagons. Go to Full Review

While I appreciate the attempts for bringing diversity to the Wild West, and love some of the actions scenes, this remake amuses, but mostly misfires. Go to Full Review

Hagrid M Mar 30, 2019 I liked the movie. In many ways, it was an improvement over the original -- better special effects, tighter dialogue, etc. It's hard to overlook the political correctness that's crept in -- the villains aren't some marauding gang of Mexicans, they're a mining company. The 'good guys' are ethnically and racially balanced -- like the backdrop for a political candidate's rally. Still, the old 'good triumphs over bad' theme and revenge always resonate with me -- wish I could get past that. And yes, the story is improbable -- poor homesteaders coming to a moral but lethal bounty hunter with meager cash and having him in turn round up 6 other lethal fighters willing to work for free is improbable. But then that's no more outlandish than most movie themes. The 'bad guy' is a little over-played. Why would a mining boss need to be murderous? Legal proceedings would be enough. But this was still a fun movie to watch, even if the outcome wasn't a big surprise. See more
Harry R Mar 27, 2019 It wasn't terrible, but they tried so hard to make it diverse they forgot to give most of the characters any motivation. They basically came along because Denzel Washington told them to. The Mexican character was there basically because he was Mexican. Ditto for the Asian guy with the knives. The Indian was there because he had been told his "path lay along a different direction." What does that even mean? Could have been better. See more
Rey S Mar 24, 2019 A very likable cast and story, Magnificent 7 does exactly what it's meant to do, breathe life back into the western, keep the audience excited, and pays homage to the classic original .This is a fun film with a great cast. There really is not anything to dislike about this movie. See more
Theodore G Mar 11, 2019 A action packed western with an impressive cast. While this film isn't perfect and makes some missteps in the story, it delivers a great final shootout that makes it well worth the watch See more
Albus R Mar 11, 2019 Banal but well shot and well-acted. The tale at end turns into fantasy when the villain unveils a Magic Gatling Gun that can elevate and sweep and send 75,000 bullets downstream all with a two-foot "clip" the operator puts in. That gun did more damage to Ethan Hawke and the Chinaman in the tower than the Nazi 88 or tank did to Barry Pepper in his tower in "Saving Private Ryan". I mean, I guess all Tom Hanks in the latter movie should've done to stymie the Nazis was to reveal a GATLING GUN which would just penetrate things to infinity and spread bullets as if from a sun with photons, spreading everywhere in a cosmic globe. So. Yeah, I mean just a few tweaks from a scriptwriter or plotter would've made this a nice character study ala the previous and the Kurosawa. Instead Magic Gatling Gun. And why so much effort from the town to secure Denzel and the other samurais? They should've just bought a Gatling Gun of their own, right? Or done the ritual that would make such a weapon appear, as unexpected and impossible-to-be as the Seven Samurai made it. Jesus. See more
Rey G Mar 9, 2019 The Magnificent Seven is a great remake with an astounding cast and full of intense action only marred by its occasional use of western cliches. See more
