It's been nearly a decade since Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgård), also known as John Clayton III, left Africa to live in Victorian England with his wife Jane. Danger lurks on the horizon as Leon Rom (Christoph Waltz), a treacherous envoy for King Leopold, devises a scheme that lures the couple to the Congo. Rom plans to capture Tarzan and deliver him to an old enemy in exchange for diamonds. When Jane becomes a pawn in his devious plot, Tarzan must return to the jungle to save the woman he loves.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

The Legend of Tarzan has more on its mind than many movies starring the classic character, but that isn't enough to make up for its generic plot or sluggish pace.

K. Austin Collins The Ringer Aug 10, 2017
The movie is so devoted to offering a clever course-correction of the Tarzan myth, while still staying true to that myth, that it overlooks its own impossibility. Go to Full Review

Some things should be left in the past and forgotten. Case in point: Tarzan. Go to Full Review

While technical aspects are strong, especially as they pertain to the motion capture effects utilized to bring the African beasts running through the jungle to life, sadly this is the end of the good news. Go to Full Review

From the laughable script to the horrible performances, bad computer-generated imagery to asinine action beats, ‘The Legend of Tarzan’ is a gravely unpleasant big-budget sedative. Go to Full Review

The film’s faults center more around its inability to invigorate the franchise and surprise us with something fresh and new. Go to Full Review

Its as though the filmmakers learned about the reality of the period in which their story takes place, and they became so disenchanted and obsessed with historical accuracy that they forgot to make an escapist adventure. Go to Full Review

Rey L Apr 25, 2019 Saw it in 4DX 3D and yes, it is visually appealing; however, the story did not stop me for looking into my phone for several times. Was I missing Phil Collins songs? See more
Kylo L Apr 13, 2019 It's the Tarzan story you know, only a little different. This movie was not what I was expecting at all. I was expecting the Disney version we all know so well, but this was a pleasant surprise. If you have ever watched Disney film and thought "but I want to know what happens to all the characters next" you are for sure going to love this movie. I mean, I'm even down for a sequel of this one right now. I think Alexander Skarsgård did a great Tarzan, very strong but he also had something soft and loving going on, which made him more "human". I liked that. Margot Robbie made Jane a very strong female among all the males, which made her an even more impressive character. I really enjoyed Samuel L. Jackson as well, he was funny and wise and I liked it. I do feel like Christoph Waltz didn't really stand out with his character, I mean, he did a great job as always, but I think he has greater works. All the animals looked so real and mighty, most of the visuals were truly beautiful. Which, for me, is a great plus. I really enjoyed this story, so I would really recommend this one to all of you :-) See more
Anakin R Mar 24, 2019 The Legend of Tarzan, is a visually stunning movie boasting with a outstanding cast.
Han L Feb 23, 2019 i enjoyed it! wasn't expecting to, seen far too many sluggish boring - we've seen all this so many times before - stories of Tarzan. This told the backstory (although god knows why, surely everyone knows it) but in flashback and memories which connected to the plot that was happening in useful ways. The action was convincing, the animals well CGId, (i've seen some ropy CGI work even in King Kong, so I was pleased not to notice the join in this) and believable. Sam Jackson was Sam Jackson and never disappoints and there's an awwwww ending. Perfect family weekend fodder. See more
Hermione M Jan 20, 2019 Strengths: She has done some great movies, but Margot Robbie (Jane Clayton) has a tendency to be the highlight of a lackluster movie (see: Suicide Squad; Terminal). Thatâ(TM)s the case here. While itâ(TM)s not one of her better performances, sheâ(TM)s still the highlight. Thereâ(TM)s a fierceness she brings to Jane that is needed since those old âlooks like Tarzan, fights like Janeâ? jokes were around. I also think Christoph Waltz (Leon Rom) was a good villain. He should just play only bad guys from now on. I appreciated how they went with a slightly new take on the Tarzan story, and the movie benefitted from some cool visual effects. Itâ(TM)s a good looking movie. Weaknesses: As much as I like Alexander Skarsgard (Tarzan/John Clayton III), I just didnâ(TM)t think he fit this role. He felt out of place throughout and never felt like the Tarzan I was hoping for. Samuel L. Jackson (George Washington Williams) is just being his usual self and not in a way that works. And while the visuals are nice, the action leaves a lot to be desired. Thereâ(TM)s a fight between Tarzan and an ape that should be exciting and it just isnâ(TM)t. Thatâ(TM)s the biggest issue with this movie. Itâ(TM)s just not very entertaining. This should have just been a fun movie about a man swinging in the jungle and it takes itself way too seriously. Thatâ(TM)s not a take I feel works here. The first act drags badly and it never really picks up, leading to a boring movie. Overall: The visuals and the solid work by Margot Robbie and Christoph Waltz save this. However, both have done way better in other stuff and the movie is just too boring to ever be any fun. See more
